notes

“Ascona” was recorded live on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Ascona, Switzerland at Jazz Ascona's Lago Stage. It was recorded in two hours using three microphones. We had some of our very favorite musicians in the world record with us including Mark Braud, Tricia Boutee and Jon Allred.

I'll Be There-
Trombonist (and all-around brass warrior) Nat McIntosh put together this fresh arrangement of the Jackson 5 hit. This was the last song recorded at the session, and you can hear everybody letting it all hang out during the gospel outro.

I’ll Fly Away-
Tricia "Sista Teedy" Boutte is the star on this one. We were already big fans of her performances in New Orleans with Bob French's band, and we were honored that she agreed to sing with us. During this song, we remember Greg Stafford second-lining and doing all kinds of moves on top of a narrow stone wall next to the Lago Stage – we were worried that he was going to fall off!

Jockomo-
This song was written and recorded in 1954 by James "Sugarboy" Crawford. Though it's most commonly performed as "Iko Iko," Crawford's grandson (New Orleans gospel/R&B prodigy Davell Crawford) requested that we call it by its original name if we were ever to record it.

Good Enough-
Trumpeter Jeff Maddern brought in this underrated Bobby Brown classic, and since its Ascona debut it's become a hit at Mama Digdown's shows. When we play it we think of Jeff skatin’ to this song with all the ladies at the roller rink back in K-Town. He must have looked fly.

Remember the Time-
This classic Michael Jackson joint makes for a great street tune, and it sounded especially huge bouncing off the beautiful buildings and alleyways of Ascona.

I Got a Woman-
To say that we all loved listening to John Alred over the course of the festival would be an understatement. It was an honor to have him play with us, and the solo break he took on this Ray Charles tune brought the house down.

When My Dreamboat Comes Home-
Grand Marshall Earl Conway is a mainstay of Jazz Ascona, and we wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to participate without him. Thanks, Earl! This song was one of the many songs that we performed with him during our time in Ascona. Earl was by far the best-dressed cat on this whole session!

Shake It & Break It-
This song has been the opener of hundreds of Mama Digdown's shows. Many of us are fans of Mark Braud's record of the same name, so it seemed like fate when he happened to walk on by just before the tape started rolling. He was gracious enough to sing it, and John Alred takes the solo.

Careless Love-
Listen to Nat McIntosh tear the house down with his ruinous trombone solo on this one.
