MAMA DONI says GET WILD & CRAZY
FOR THE BIG JEWISH PARTY HOLIDAY OF PURIM
with my new EP, ‘I LOVE PURIM!’
“Wacky Jewish indie-rock for kids.” - The Star-Ledger
“Mama Doni … is part ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic (for the hilarious and surprisingly insightful lyrics), part Sarah Silverman (but much cleaner and only the parts of Sarah’s show where she innocently sings her little heart out), and that adorable mom down the street who manages to wear bright red lipstick and cute track suit to put out the recycling at 6 a.m. Mama Doni – you had me at mazeltov.” – KIWI magazine
Putting a fresh, new spin on Purim, MAMA DONI brings her special brand of “funky music with a Jewish twist” to her new EP, ‘I Love Purim!’ (Mama Doni Productions, $4). The album, featuring 4 new Mama Doni originals, overflows with the zany sensibility of Mama Doni’s recently released16-song debut CD, ‘I Love Herring (& Other Fish Shticks for Kids) (Mama Doni Productions, $14.99) and her holiday EP, ‘I Love Chanukah!’
Purim is a wild and crazy Jewish holiday, and Montclair resident Doni Zasloff Thomas, aka MAMA DONI, says, “Enjoy!” The popular singer/songwriter breaks the mold of traditional Jewish music, bringing a contagious and unexpected blend of reggae, rock, folk, country, klezmer and “Jewgrass” to her albums-- all woven together with Yiddish lingo and a hip Jewish sensibility. MAMA DONI’s energized and unconventional songs are stories unto themselves, with characters – such as Bubbie, the Cowgirl Jew; The Jewperheroes; and Shlomo the Gefilte Fish – that are a breath of fresh air for everyone from "Babies to Bubbies" - hip young kids and their even hipper parents and grandparents.
‘I Love Purim!’ showcases an eclectic mix of musical styles in songs such as "Hey Man,” a catchy pop-rock tune that playfully puns the name of Purim’s infamous villain, Haman; "Purim Bash," a Halloween-inspired reinvention of Purim blending 50s kitsch with crazy electro drum and bass; "The Kooky Cookie," an uptempo ska number celebrating the unique personality of Purim’s signature snack, the hamentaschen; and "Costume Conundrum," the tale of a child undecided about Purim attire, set to a manic, kid-friendly dance beat remake of a traditional Purim melody.
Kids’ media expert Amy Kraft, of Media Macaroni, enthused about Mama Doni’s music, “We were all laughing out loud … Listen as Mama Doni spreads around some challah-day spirit in her inimitable cross between Sheryl Crow and Tone Loc.” THE MAMA DONI BAND came away with one of the top prizes at the 2008 International Jewish Music Festival, held in Amsterdam, competing against ensembles from 15 countries. ‘I Love Chanukah!’ was named one of the Top 10 Chanukah Music for Kids CDs of 2008 by About.com. Recognized in The New York Times, New York Post, The Star-Ledger, The Record, Time Out New York Kids, New Jersey Jewish News, The Jewish Week, and Jewish Woman International Magazine, THE MAMA DONI BAND is delighting families throughout the country.
