Album Notes

Mamady Keïta was born in 1950 in Balandougou (Guinea), a village in the Wassolon region of North Eastern Guinea. He began playing the djembe, traditional Malinke drum, at the age of 2 and by the time he was 5 was accompanying the local Master drummer at traditional celebrations. He was initiated into the secrets of the djembe at age 7 and was then recruited at age 13 to play in Guinea's renowned National Ballet Djoliba with whom he travelled the globe for the next 23 years. In 1988 he moved to Belgium and formed his premier percussion ensemble "Sewa Kan", featuring traditional rhythms and songs of the Mandeng. In 1991, he opened his school of Mandeng percussion, called Tam Tam Mandingue, which now has 13 branches around the world. Mamady Keita is considered one of the world's greatest djembe players of all times. Listening to this LIVE recording will transport you the heart of Africa and feed your soul the rhythms of life.

King of Modern Mandeng Music
author: WoMama
Mamady has been such an inspiration to the drum community I create with. His arrangements are fast paced with lots of breaks and songs, but they still have that acoustic traditional sound. Mamady is simultaneously preserving his culture and evolving his music. We sing this song for Sunu in the middle of our track \"Dreams\" on WoMama\'s Foté Faré CD. Hopefully Mamady would have a good laugh at the album title!
