notes
"Evolver" is the first studio album by The Mammals. Their earlier live CD "Born Live" and newer studio CD "Rock That Babe" are also available on CD Baby.
In 2002, Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, Michael Merenda, and Ruth Ungar welcomed the recording studio into their living room and collaborated with producer/engineer Max Feldman to create this varied and ground-breaking gem.
Many tracks are sparsely arranged for fiddle, banjo, and guitar. Others incorporate bass, drums and overdubs - a forshadowing of things to come on later recordings.
The vocals are captivating, the music toe-tapping, the songwriting poignant, and the arrangements of traditional and classic songs, "Lady Margaret," "Way Down the Old Plank Road," and "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" overflow with energy and originality.
Guest musicians on this CD include: Lyn Hardy, Aoife O'Donovan, Jay Ungar, Molly Mason, Ken Maiuri, Sarah Lee Guthrie, and Johnny Irion.
The current Mammals quintet tours internationally and features Jacob Silver on bass and Chris Merenda on drums.
Over the years, the band has continued to create a strongly grounded acoustic sound that is beautiful, energized, and raw - preserving the timeless appeal of American roots music.
"The Mammals play old-time stringband music the way Jack Kerouac wrote novels - with an abandon born of a deep understanding of structure and form. Their sound is wild, mirthful, and masterful." - Scott Alarik, Boston Globe

I met the Mammals last summer at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and was inspired to hear the next generation of revolutionaries heating up. Their music is aesthetically beautiful, deep, rich and uplifting. Evolver is too. They carry on passionate and intelligent hope.
Right on!
author: IanSaw The Mammals live in Flagstaff, AZ...what an awesome group...the CD does them justice. Great music, great CD! Glad I bought the CD.
AWESOME TUNES
author: MARTHATHIS IS AN OUTSTANDING GROUP OF MUSCIANS AND THEIR CHOICE OF MUSIC IS FANTASTIC. THE HAIRCUT SONG IS A UNIQUE CATCHY SONG. MY GRANDSON LOVES THIS CD
Good... but not as good as live
author: TimI got the CD after enjoying a live concert. The concert was great but the CD sounded a little hollow compared to the live sound. Turning up the bass helped some. I was also hoping for more of the intense and fast fiddle and banjo, but instead found more slower songs than I would have liked. All in all it's still very enjoyable.
Even better live, but you have to love the music wherever you listen to it.
author: BeckyThe songs are a great variety of folk music, contemporary bluegrass, and traditional verses put to more modern fiddle melodies. Picture the cat and the fiddle from the nursery rhyme dancing over the moon, then scramble it up so the cat is holding a drumset and bopping to headphones, and the fiddle is plucking the strings with fits of ectasy. ...That pretty much sums up their music.
Fantastic mix of traditional and original songwriting.
author: Carolyn LockeThis CD contains a wonderful balance of rollicking instrumentals and beautifully harmonious voices. The mix of traditional folk songs with original songwriting gives the listener this kind of music at its best.
My new favorite CD :-)
author: delilah from Full Frontal FolkI love the way the Mammals continue to help expand the definition of "folk" music with their latest CD, Evolver. This CD certainly proves the point that the music is still evolving. This CD kept me company on a LONG ride from Nashville to Philadelphia and I never got tired of listening to it.... I'm already looking forward to the next one :-)
teacher gives it an A+
author: Sarah MorganOf the modern folk albums out there, EVOLVER is surely one of the few which will be listened to by the next generation of folkies. This album has astonishing instrumentals and insightful lyrics which recapture the satrical commentary of earlier folk artists. As a teacher, I'm encouraged to find music which carries on the traditions of the people that I teach about which I can actually recommend to my students (junior highers) as something to which they'll enjoy listening.
Folkin Great!
author: Micah SolomonGreat takes on ultra-traditional ballads (now uptempo folk-rockers), well-picked cover tunes, and originals. Listening to this CD is the most fun I've had in my car in awhile.
