Album Notes

Matthew Manning(principal Oboe of Ireland's National Symphony orchestra) and the composer Michael McGlynn (director of Anuna) have joined forces on this new album.
The Silver River of the title flows through the heart of Ireland and is seen as a metaphor for the constantly flowing progress of musical tradition, constantly augmented by external influences and streams. All pieces on the album are arranged or composed by McGlynn, including works by the Italian composer Geminiani, who lived in Ireland at the same time as the blind harper O'Carolan.
This beautiful and atmospheric record also includes the specially composed title track where Matthew Is joined by ex-Moving Hearts percussionist Noel Eccles and three tracks feature the soft tenor voice of Michael McGlynn himself.

Golden sounds from a "Silver River"
author: leigh trifari
I wanted to buy this CD because, quite frankly, I can't get enough of Michael McGlynn's music. There is something quite alchemical about hearing another artist's take on songs that I already have heard and grown to love; for example: "Aisling","Where all Roses Go","From Nowhere to Nowhere". Hearing Michael sing on this CD was also a bonus--but I would have enjoyed this work just as much, because Mathhew's playing is so expressive and evocative. The oboe is one of my favorite instruments to listen to, and this album was a treat, start to finish. Kudos to cdbaby for having this album available, for getting it to me so quickly, and for your attentive and friendly follow-ups!

Everything I expected and more!

I bought this CD because I was singing the choral arrangement at college. I was already excited about the composer McGlynn, and now I am also turned on to Manning's beautiful oboe sounds. So relaxing, yet uplifting.

I bought this CD because I'd been hunting for an oboist's interpretation of "O'Carolan's Farewell to Music" - and Manning's is absolutely haunting. And I'm incredibly pleased with the entire CD! "Aisling" and "The Meeting of the Waters" starts the album off on a soothing, mellow note. As an Enya listener, I also enjoyed "I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls." Overall, it is currently one my favorite instrumental CDs, and suits this Celtophile/oboist/Ren Faire geek perfectly!
