notes

Hailed by many as the world's leading solo bassist, Michael has been pushing back the boundaries of what's possible with just a bass guitar for two decades, winning thousands of fans and wowing countless audiences the world over with his stunning compositions and mind-blowing technical mastery of the instrument. Since his time as the house bassist for the Windham Hill label, Michael's profile and influence as a solo bassist have gone from strength to strength, first through years of touring alongside acoustic guitar legend Michael Hedges and then through solo performances and collaborations with artists as diverse as Patti Larkin, Henry Kaiser, John Gorka and Thomas Dolby. Michael is without doubt one of the most original, remarkable and celebrated voices on the electric bass in the world today, and a performer not to be missed.

-Steve Lawson

---------------

This long awaited all-solo CD is Michael Manring's sixth under his own name. Although all his previous recordings have contained solo work, this is the first release that consists entirely of solo pieces without overdubs. Included here are thirteen new compositions recorded live in the studio and a version of one of Michael's most often requested tunes, "Selene," recorded live at a show in San Francisco. Soliloquy also contains enhanced CD content - simply put it in your computer to view Michael's extensive 24-page liner notes detailing the instruments, techniques, inspirations, tunings, composing and recording processes used on the CD as well as photos and two live performance videos.

  • THE WIZZARD COMES FINALLY ALONE
    author: Sergio Mattoso - BRAZIL

Quite many bassists have been using the tapping technique these days, but quite a few with the self-confidence and the creativity of this remarkable pioneer. If you are looking for intrincated harmonies, intriguing melodies and amazing rythms played all at once, Soliloquy is a must have.

  • Original & Refreshing
    author: Ron Richards

This is the most original album I’ve heard in decades. Mr. Manring, once again, demonstrates his mastery of the bass. The album shifts from exhilarating to challenging to relaxing, while remaining completely enjoyable. If you like or play bass, this is an important album for your collection. If you’re just an audiophile, you owe yourself this aural treat!

  • very good!!!

  • Completely Different...
    author: albert sears

This is something quite different from the norm. It is innovative and virtuistic. It's way more than bass guitar playing, and something more than jazz. Definitions and categories are not easily made at this level of solo playing. Michael is also a versatile collaborator who can enhance a range of musical styles - an ability that stands out in his performances with Chris Sohre on her latest album. Manring's music is outstanding and will certainly interest the intelligent listener who abhors commercial pop and craves envelop-pushing performance and compositions.

  • OUTSTANDING

A SOLO ALBUM THAT YOU CAN LISTEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN ...AND EACH TIME , YOU DISCOVER A NEW TUNE WITHIN...THANKS MICHAEL

  • Michael Manring "Soliloguy"
    author: Tim Roberts

What an incredible musician. Michael makes the bass come alive in ways that wonderful to listen to. Listening to this CD is inspiring to me as a musician. An excellent musical collection.

  • One Word: "MIND BLOWING!" (see what I mean?)
    author: BluesBrian

Michael Manring is an amazing musician! Five stars is all they allow! (I would give at least 7 stars) A few of these amazing tunes have been available as "free download" for quite some time.. who would have thought that even more amazing tunes were on this CD.. (OK, I did. I've seen Michael "live"!) No smoke and mirrors.. Michael plays this entirely straight! Awesome! "I left America" is on my short list of incredibly beautiful songs. It's a "four streamer"! (you only get four corners to your eyes! get it?) I'd love to see this CD on a DVD. (There are a few tunes on "youtube".)

  • Just fantastic like I expected!!!
    author: Russ

Michael Manring is one of the most amazingly talented bassists I've ever heard. Listening to Soliloquy is like being in bass heaven. From odd synth-like noises to beautiful fingerboard tapping passages, this disc is well worth hours of listening. It's timeless.

  • Prepare to love your bass again
    author: mS

Manring is just in a class of his own. Some beauty, some eerie, some funk, all amazing. A definitive album for those who want to know what a bass is really capable of.

  • Virtuoso, magnificient, genious, etc.
    author: INDOFUNKA

Manring, if you need personal assisitant during your tour of this cd, pls contact me, I will work for free... I have degrees from UCBerkeley, Stanford, and a decent bassist, not some bum of the street... The content is fluid, dynamic, unique, innovative, as well as musical. CD Baby service is Top notch!!!

  • very hard to do (talking from experience)
    author: ben meigners

first, as a bass player I must say that this is quite an incredible tecnique he has, nothing that's never been done before but still facsinating to see and hear for the first time, second time if you are a bass player, but, the tricks are tricks and the harmonies are limited, even when it sounds like the bible for harmonics on the bass. except that, it's completely bad ass, groovy and cool, lookin' forward to hear you with a group, and maybe even get a lesson.

  • Manring makes my earball pop
    author: Philamonjaro

Michael Manring has been a favorite of mine for years. I first saw him when I presented Montreux in CA. and was floored when he strapped on two basses for a duet with himself. Pat Brayer recommended Soliloquy and I ordered immediately. The CD lives up to my expectation. Thanks!

  • Manring is from another planet!
    author: Kathryn Keats

This CD leaves me in awe. Every note, each rhythm, all the feelings, right there out of the artists hands and heart. Michael Manring just gave us all some peace and happiness, letting us ride with his sounds into a place of extreme pleasure.

  • Great CD and Musician
    author: Ernest

Michael Manring has a very unique voice in the world of Bass players. His ability to get so much out of one insrument has truly challenged the established ideas of the bass as just a rhythm instrument. Very inspiring.

  • the most inspiring bass solo I've ever encountered
    author: jonas held

I must say, michael manring has got to be the most amazing solo artist I have ever heard. now, of course, I am but a lowly listener, and not a musical genius, but I don't believe that I have ever been so moved by solo instrumental music in all my life, If you read this michael, I hope you are smiling right now, because I am every time I hear your music. it is absolutely beautiful, and every track is good

  • Unbelievable, Exhilarating, Captivating, Dynamic and Poetic
    author: Michael

WOW....Like a few other reviewers I've just discovered Michael Manring, and this, for me, is a real discovery. Soliloquy is a light years beyond what I understood a bass guitar and artist were capable of. The textures, colours, pulses and phrases in Michael's creations are far from what one might expect of a bass guitar. Michael played many cuts from Soliloquy at his performance in Toronto on Nov 3rd, and this CD is wonderfully tangible. You can feel it, you can smell it, you can taste it. It's like he's playing right here again. Get it and listen... you'll grow!

  • You should hear him with Don Ross!
    author: Eugene

I went for a Don Ross concert and had no idea who Michael Manring was. And then he blew the audience away with his music. This is what it must have been like to see Jimi Hendrix in his time. Until now I didn't know that one can play actual music on bass guitar (and yes, I listened to some Jaco). Michael should get more publicity. For those who don't believe that he plays solo without any overdub, just go and see him!

  • the greatest???
    author: Gregory Bruce Campbell

I am such a Fan!!! it seems each time i feel i come up with something original and all my own on my bass... I can find it already done, and better on a Michael Manring album. Michael seems to be a staple in the soundtrack for my life. I love his music, it as comfortable as breathing! And is as inspiring to me as life itself! I HIGHLY reccomend every CD he is on!

  • Very Good but...
    author: keiph

All tunes are very awesome, obviously, but I don't have satisfied with this completely. Manring, he is a perfect guy as techian and virtuoso. By the way, Perfomence in group ,with other majestic artists, that is the best I like. For instace, ATTENTION DEFICIT, YO! MILES project, SUZANNE CIANI & WAVE. For sure, bass has not been just rhythm part but also meldodic instrument since Jaco plays. Good. But it is too dazzling to appreciate "BASS". Except for "Selene". I think that Jaco was a perfect bassman as a leader and rhythm part. This album is Manring's solo version. He is also good with Group Perfomance like jaco. But it didn't reach my expectation.

  • Great Music!
    author: Mara Raskin

This album is well rounded and incredibly creative. Well done!

  • Outrageous!
    author: David Howells

I have always admired people who can bass-it-up; jaco, jonas, stanley, dave (holland), ron (carter), but this guy has come up with something prety darned special here - as good, if not in some ways (due to the arrangements & oddities), better than any CD produced by any of the above - or indeed anything he did with maestro, Michael Hedges. A real must and ALMOST as good as Oriental Bass by Renaud Garcia Fons - but then there were loads'v world class musos on that masterpiece. Easily 5 stars and 5 exclamations!!!!!

  • My God!
    author: Musilosophy

This bassist is a genius. I have never heard something like this. His bass seems an orchestra. Great groove and funk rhythms.

  • author: Ickybob

I cannot add more insight to the already thorough and numerous opinions expressed here about Soliloquy. I have only three words for bass lovers in search of something truely unique and fresh...Buy this album.

  • Amazing
    author: Richard Davis

Michael always puts out a quality product. I've seen him perform a couple of times and he is always great to listen to. I hope he does more in the future with other musicians. Recording quality is excellent, as usual.

  • All solo, it's about freakin' time.
    author: Michelle Petter

awesome. I could pontificate, but I won't. listen again if you need to know what I mean and if you still don't get it, you suck.

  • author: Rossano

He emerges in a -creative and tecnical high level reseach- context which are the two essential components to obtain these results:a unique harmony of its own kind which offers different and floating feelings.By means of his tecnique he is able to bring the level of this four-string - low frequence instrument to a level of real performance .After having listened to the CD Soliloquy and being at the concerts in Olgiate and Villa Arconati; I have realized that Michael Manring is unique and really alternative in musical research!

  • If perfection had a name...
    author: Craig Feuss

Michael Manring's Solilquy is an amazing work by a musical genius. In reading the extended production notes, you see Michael's attention to detail. He clearly explains how he can create a more realistic and live sound to people with little knowledge of music or recording. The music that Manring creates is a beautiful look into his soul. You can certainly see the amount of himself that Michael infuses into each and every one of his songs. Michael Manring takes a very linear instrument and creates multi-dimensional masterpieces that allow the individual to realize just how much love he has for his instrument and get a clear view of his musical genius. I await Michael Manring's next album and will certainly strive to accomplish all that I can, having seen what one man can do.

  • author: D. Quincy

I love the CD, its great. I am glad I purchased it. I plan to buy more of his music.

  • truly amazing
    author: Toby

I have never ever in my life been blown away and left speechless like this before. I can't even begin to describe this album for it is far too dynamic and complex, all i can really say is; thank you Michael, and anyone else; whatever you like about music you should buy this cd.

  • speechless.....
    author: Fabrizio from Italy

I think that life gives everyday a gift to each one of us.I think that Michael is a gift for all the universe of music.Hearing this album from samples seems to be into a journey without any time and space....I cannot imagine whn I will have it on my hands!Fabrizio www.tribaltouch.it

  • Awesome
    author: Brian VanVranken

An awesome display. I would set this album next to the likes of Victor Wootens Show of Hands. Inspiring to say the least.

  • one of the best i have ever heard!!!
    author: amir

this cd has been a great inspiration to me and a great pleasure to listen to. recommended for all!

  • My idea of heavenly music.
    author: Geezer Reed

This is one more example of Michael Manring's pre-eminence on the bass. For me, this is indeed heavenly music!

  • Excellent, very musical and a pleasure to listen to
    author: Tomax

Of course, a solo CD of an artist is usually something that's more interesting to people playing the same instrument than for the general listener. I think this CD is fun to listen to, interesting if you're looking for inspiration and just amazing if you wonder what can be done on bass. It's not a CD you can dance to but it has lots of music to just listen and dream to

  • beautiful solo-bass album
    author: René

MICHAEL MANRING Soliloquy (PRIVATE RELEASE) From the beginning of his career bassist Michael Manring wanted to make a real solo-album. His original label (Windham Hill) though thought that wasn’t commercial enough, while he himself got fascinated with working in a group when he was with Alchemy Records. The last couple of years we saw him appear quite often in all kinds of projects, like At War With Self, Attention Deficit, the trio Scott McGill/Michael Manring/Vic Stevens, Cloud Chamber and recently A Triggering Myth and with artists like Jon Durant and Trip Wamsley. But last year his solo-record Soliloquy finally came out, on which he deepened the solo-concept by converting the idea of being solitary as a theme. There are tracks for instance which are based on isolated celestial bodies, like the funky Helios, which is full of so called slapping, and the mysterious Selene, which is played live. But also the somewhat lonely existence of a travelling musician is being incorporated in a couple of songs, like the subtle, somewhat like Mike Karn and Stanley Clarke sounding Excuse Me, Mr. Manring, the ballad I Left America and Insomnia Lessons, which is centred around one single note (!) and comparable with Helios. Apart from that eccentric individuals like the Indian female artist Dabuda and the inventor Johan Bessler where sources of inspiration for the rhythmically plaited, somewhat King Crimson-like Dabuda’s Memory and The Orffyreus Wheel, which is being larded with beautiful Ebow-effects. It should be noticed that everything is being recorded without any overdubs, but because Manring uses his basses very versatile, he knows how to create a full and/or alternate sound. In Solipsism for instance, which is full of effects, paperclips are being used, while the echoing sounds in When We Were Asleep In The Earth are being caused by the drumming on the body of his instrument. Because all of this Soliloquy has become an impressive well though-out solo-product. Information: www.manthing.com

  • Jaco DaVinci: innovation, emotion, creativity, heart.
    author: Bob Villwock

To listen to this CD is to witness Michael Manring stand alone and evolve a revolution of the instrument, reinvent his musical voice, and unleash his creative brilliance with soul, emotion, heart, and humor. It is a moving piece of art that will leave you inspired and full of wonder. This is what it would sound like if DaVinci had ever met Jaco.

  • Awesome.
    author: Tyler

I don't exactly remember where I heard about this artist/album, but after listening to the samples on here, I decided to buy it. Man, did it pay off. Simply amazing basswork lies within this album, made even more impressive by the absence of overdubs. 5 Stars, and highly recommended!

  • Always incredible, always refreshing!!!
    author: Ritchie Hernandez

What a mind expanding experience! All of that creative sound coming from only 2 hands and 10 fingers!

  • Incredible solo bass
    author: Brian Sharples

Michael Manring is a master of the bass guitar and this CD proves it. The playing is incredible and the compositions show what is possible with the bass. It's hard to believe that there are no overdubs on these tunes. I'd love to see him live just to see how he does it.

  • a tremendous recording, brilliantly conceived.
    author: Paul Simmons

I saw Michael in Reading in the UK and it was a real treat as a bass player myself to see such creativity being produced on a bass and this CD has provided further proof of that creativity. It is a breathtaking display of bass virtuosity but with an entrepreneurial approach which makes it a CD to be played time and time again, brilliant !

  • amazing
    author: shaw

his solo work unbelievable and his music continues to be an inspiration to me ... I only wish he didnt have so many wierd songs tho ...

  • an amazing cd
    author: Jane

This was my first bass only cd, though Michael plays on most of the Michael Hedges cds I already own. Like Hedges, Manring is a master of his instrument, striving to rediscover the bass along with his audience. He really is amazing, as is this cd. I can't speak to specifics of technique or anything technical. But I can say that there wasn't a bad song on the cd, and most of them blew me away. I definitely hope he releases more solo work of this quality!

  • A true visionary
    author: Bob Braun

A true visionary! Michael's music keeps getting better and better. This is a great record for those who love solo bass. He is amazing!!

  • I like it but I think on the soloing it needs diversity
    author: Dean Rakstang

Micheal's music has been a draw for me since I heard him play at Gerald Vesley's Bass Boot Camp. I had a tape of his back some years ago but I wasnt as drawn. I do like his use of Hip shot tuners in his songs.

  • Insanely awesome
    author: Reginal Tip

this is the best solo bass cd ive heard in my entire life. for bass players that wanna explore more possibilities of using the bass

  • Manring never disappoints, this is more proof.
    author: Mark Graham

Michael Manring's talent is undeniable, his musical ability is plain to see and his creativity seems to know no bounds. What I particularly love and about Manring's approach is it is so radically different to that of other bass players but without losing it's musicality. Percussive moves propel songs along beautifully while the use of altered tunings combined with an impressive array of techniques create original pieces that really do captivate you. Each song leaves me leaning over towards the speakers, jaw slightly open listening intently for each little sound he produces. Helios was actually the selling point of this CD, I listened to the sample over a dozen times in a few days. Morning Star was a pleasant surprise, very easy listening but when you know Manring's ability, you know it's not actually easy. All in all, a top CD with wicked tracks prepared meticulously by Manring. Don't miss it!

  • Captivating!! I'm totally addicted!!
    author: Stacey Steisel

Soliloquy is one of the best CD's I've ever heard & I've heard thousands. I've sung classical & opera professionally & love most music types; but considering this is solo bass, it totally blew me away. You create beautiful, awesome music. My son(guitar/bass player)says it's sick - from him a big compliment!! Can't wait for more!

  • genius electric bassist
    author: Doug Odell

Michael Manring picked up the torch lit by one-of-a-kind bass innovators like Jaco. He continues to push the limits, with his use of alternate tunings, chords, harmonics, percussive effects and ever-evolving, brave compositional exploration. SOLILOQUY is a bass player's guilty pleasure.

  • Awesome! Inspiring! Beautiful! Magic! A piece of art.
    author: Migue Vargas

Absolutly inspiring, deep and beautiful music.Michael expands the possibilities of bass guitar far from what is conceived.Music to fly away from this earth.Pure magic. Beautiful artistic photos.A work of love in every detail.A MASTERPIECE.

  • Excellent CD of bass virtuosity and musicality
    author: Paul Simmons

Saw Mike Manring in the UK 2 years ago with my son and we were both bowled over with his performance, and this cd matches that performance, a brilliant recording !

  • exciting display of technique, virtuosity and creativity

This should be even better live....

  • Virtuosity that cannot be imagined, only experienced.

How wonderful to listen to music that isn't 'reminiscent of...', 'plenty of influences from...' and is a worthy addition to the Works of Man, musically speaking. A triumph of the natural instrument over the synthetic.

  • Pure Artistical Genius - Captivating from the Start
    author: Jason T.

I've never heard anything quite like this. Bassists, musicians, and general music lovers alike would be well served to listen to this CD. A true artistical statement from the opening track to the end. Bass players will love what this man has to offer. Nothing else like it - extensive liner notes complement this musical journey. Keep up the great work, Michael!

  • Absolutely amazing!

Amazing compositions and playing. Anyone who has heard and enjoyed any of Michaels other work will enjoy this long overdue solo CD. This is music that will amaze those who appreciate technical viruosity, but is also just enjoyable to listen to.

    author: Greg

Michael has done it again with another suberb CD. Being a bass player myself i have always enjoyed the solo pieces on his cd's and to have an entire cd of them is just incredible. unfortuantely the enhanced features seem to not be on my copy of the cd (not even the html file the cd mentions) so i do not get to see the video's.

  • This CD has gotta be a 'havething' Mr. Manring!
    author: Derren Lee Poole

A superb album. Beautifully conceived and recorded. A fine balance between pure technical bass playing skill and artistic integrity. The enhanced element to the CD really goes a long way in making you realise just how talented and driven Michael is as a composer and performer. The two videos of Morning Star & Diagonal Head Trauma which are included are a real eye opener. As is the 24 page pdf essay on the techniques and processes used in making the album. Anyone who is familiar with the work of Victor Wootens album A Show Of Hands will know immediatley where this album is coming from, and the standard you should expect to hear. Simply awe inspiring. Time for me to start practicing I think!

  • An incredible sound coming from an incredible musician

  • The Bass Experience Could Not Get Better!
    author: Joseph Daoust

Having seen Michael Manring perform an extra-long version of "Excuse Me, Mr. Manring" while testing out an SWR stack at the 2005 Winter NAMM Show, this CD holds extra value to me. Listening to him live was one of the best musical experiences I've ever received from another bassist, and this CD proves his live capabilities, as it is all recorded in real-time without overdubs. Manring's mastery of the bass is demonstrated with a seemingly effortless brilliance, beauty, and free form of expression that captivates and inspires the minds of aspiring artists such as myself with an extremely broad range of techniques and flavors that few artists are able to express as flawlessly as Michael Manring. If you like instrumental jazz, experimental music, incredible and inspirational talent, or listening to music that truly comes from the heart of a musician, "Soliloquy" is a definite must for your continuing journey through the vast landscape of amazing artistry and talent at its finest.

  • The Best Manthing Yet!

  • Completely blown away
    author: Reggae Eric

I have been a fan of Michael's since the early 90's when he played with Michael Hedges. This is a great musical experiance. Everyone needs a copy.

  • In a Class By Himself, By Himself
    author: William J. Feuss

John Gorka once remarked that Michael Manring “does things on the electric bass that haven’t been done before, are nearly impossible, and (are) illegal in most states.” The opening track, Helios, boldly announces that Michael Manring has double-handedly taken electric-bass playing to that elusive “next level,” which is at an altitude and space that he solely occupies at this time. To be a bit redundant, he is in a class by himself, by himself. To quote the liner notes: “All compositions written by Michael Manring and performed in real-time, without overdubs.” There is unmatched attention to detail in recording, as well as in performance. In a refreshing departure from excessive compression, the quality of this recording allows the listener to experience musical dynamics that reveal Michael’s remarkable control of the instrument. Yes, his technique is astounding, but there is much more. There is great intellect, and great beauty. While it might be flattering, it would also be limiting to say that every bassist should own this CD. Soliloquy deserves a much broader audience.

  • Excellent! Well worth the wait.
    author: Darryl W. Funk

After first hearing Manring play with Michael Hedges, I was an instant fan. I've enjoyed all of his previous works, but found that it was always the solo pieces that left me wanting more. Not too many bass players could pull off an entire album of solo bass and keep it interesting, but Soliloquy flows wonderfully right through without becoming tedious or repetetive. I felt that the video clips were also a nice added feature. After watching them, I still shook my head in disbelief. Well done Mr. Manring!

  • Superb Album!!

  • Something for everyone...
    author: Michael Sheehan

With this latest CD, Michael Manring has offered something to please both longtime fans and recent converts. The detail-obsessive (like me) will flip through the enhanced liner notes and photos, while those who want to simply experience sonic artistry can slip on headphones and relax. The amazing thing is, although this is solo electric bass, it isn't "music for musicians." Anyone can enjoy Michael Manring's music, and this CD is his best work yet. I'ts really a complete musical statement, direct from the artist himself. How often do you get to buy that?

  • Great - Live even better!

Michael Manring has a texture and sound that only he can perform. You will find that you stop thinking about your world, and focus on what his hands provide for listening pleasure. There is allways something new he offers.

  • another great album of discovery
    author: Jonathan Crane

Michael Manring has made another great album which further pushes the accepted envelope of the bass both technically and melodically. No one is playing the way Michael is, and that is great, he is trully an original. The only gripe is many of the tracks end very abruptly, I have noticed this with many digital recordings. Softer cutoffs seemed to be needed for the more lyrical tracks. This does not take away from the overall effect though.

  • Makes me want to play!!!
    author: Derek Grierson

Seldom have I heard an album which impressed me this much. Normally, when I hear a solo album by a bass player, the technique overwhelms the musicianship. This one's different: the compositions sound not only technically amazing, but beautifully melodic as well. Awesome just about sums it up!

  • What can I say?!
    author: Hansabass

Is there more to say than all the others did? Nope. One thing is that I'm so glad to have the latest version of Selene. It's so incredibly beautifull!!! Maybe one other thing: Next time more live video...? For the rest there is everything you wanted to know about Michael and his music except for his shoe size and his favorite meal... Fantastic album! Thank you Michael.

  • Amazing
    author: Scott J

Michael Manring takes bass to a new level. He is to bass what Michael Hedges is to guitar.

  • A Masterpiece Indeed !
    author: C. Capo

Bass guitar at it's finist. The so called background instrument takes first place. Soliloquy is a must for serious minded bass players. This solo effort has encouraged me to record bass solo ideas without inhibition. What a bonus, a bass solo project, 24 page inspiring project notes and 2 videos. A valuable collection! Don't miss out! Solo guitarists look out!

  • A very pleasant surprise
    author: Bernard Franklyn

What an imaginative way to package an artist! Sight, sound & print. I wish all the CDs in my collection were this complete. If all your artists are packaged like this I'll definitely be coming back for more.

  • BETTER THAN THE HYPE..
    author: ggainz

I never thought an all bass album could be so engaging. I am a big fan of the late Micheal Hedges as well and this CD shows that Mr Manring and Mr. Hedges have similar concepts. This entire CD blows me away.I like anyone who extends the possibilities on their given instrument and Mr. Manring is definitely doing that. Well done.

  • Great CD!!
    author: Tony Soward

Michael Manring is a master of the bass. This is a great CD, only wish it was longer.

  • Gorgeous.
    author: Seth Horan

Straight to the point; this album is simply gorgeous; there is no better way to sum up. Possibly his most complete work ever.

  • a very unique bass album form one of the best bass players out there
    author: R. Hunter

Very unique bass album. Like nothing else I've heard. One of the best bass solo albums in my collection.

  • The best CD I have ever listened to
    author: Alec Uidl

I found out about his CD from Bass Player magazine and knew I had to get it. I am a bassist, who is constantly looking for bassists with actual technique and I found one. I would reccomend this CD and listen to it everyday

  • Manring's the best!
    author: Derek

This CD is proof that Michael Manring is the best bassist in the world--past or present. I popped in the CD and was as blown away as I was the first time I heard "Thonk." He continues to blaze his revolutionary trail and bring bass into a new dimension no one dreamed of before. "Selene" is simply brilliant. "Excuse Me, Mr. Manring" has a life all its own. The multimedia features are great too. I love his pages of notes about the songs, and the videos are mindblowing. In short...I've got to build a statue, and it's gotta be of him...

  • Outrageous !!!
    author: Mike Murray

Soliloquy, the word says it all. How many instramentalist, let alone bassist, can completely captivate with a solo album. Never tire of listening to it. No doubt in my mind .... Michael Manring is the best electric bassist in the world, bar none.

  • my favorite CD of the first 1/2 of 2005
    author: Henry Kaiser

It's June of 2005 now and I have to say: this is the CD that I have enjoyed the most so far this year. MM is a creative master of extended technique, who has traveled far BEYOND any other bass player. The amazing thing here is that the incredible technique is completely in service of content, personal expression, and feelings. Music does not really get much better than this.

  • True Genius!
    author: Gary Stinson

My first exposure to Michael Manring was when I went to see Michael Hedges (we miss you!). THONK had just been released and Manring played some awesome solo's that just blew me away. Now Soliloquey shows Manring taking it too a new level with melodic depth that makes you sit back and wonder how in the world those notes could come from a bass with no overdubbing. This will always be one of my favorites!

  • Beautiful new frontiers by Michael!
    author: Mark Mills

A long time fan of Michael Manring, I own every solo CD of his work. He has the ability to consistantly create new feelings & expressions thru each of his works. This adventure is more sedate & reflective. It also opens a new element of his playing style. If you are new to Michaels solo Bass playing, Book of Flames might be a better first choice....yet this CD gets an easy 5 stars for his new creative elements on the Hyperbass. Kudos to Michael for anohter CD well done! FYI...Watch your speakers. There are some very low subsonic notes that will keep the subwoofers hard at work.

  • Love it.....................................
    author: Michael Vick

Manring is one of my favorite Bass Players, & this CD shows why. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VVV

  • writing history
    author: karlthing

the most incredible odissey in the bass world, a introspective mood built on tecnique and ispiration, a sea of emotions...Manring, as ususal, amazing..great!

  • stunningly good
    author: Nate B

Concise compositions, pushing the boundary of his instrument. All in all, one of the finest releases (in my humble opinion) of 2005

  • Spellbinding!!!!!!!!!
    author: M. Wolk

I just received the CD last night........Lyrical beauty, Finger-popping funkyness, Stupefying virtuosity, Melodic contemplativeness, Flawlessly recorded solo bass pieces from a Master of the instrument....plus extended recording notes and two VIDEOS of LIVE performances!....all rolled into one package. Bravo!

  • Great for new and old fans
    author: Jimm

This album has a great mix of newer-sounding (Read: after Thonk)pieces as well as solos similar to the old Windham Hill days, sure to please us old-timers who listened to Michael 20 years ago. Mike never ceases to astound and you don't have to be a bass player or student of composition to enjoy his music. This album proves it by not having one ensemble. Thanks again, Mike.

  • ... da bocca aperta!
    author: Matteo

Veramente spaventoso... roba alla Manring... da bocca aperta!

  • Ramarkable talent, production and composition!!!
    author: Gil Escalera

First of all, I was thrilled that this is an enhanced CD. Seeing Michael play in the video clips brings to life that this really is a one man, one take effort. Cheers for that. Aurally, the textures and fabrics that Michael weaves throughout the recording are simply remarkable and reach down to the soul. The music speaks. It's as simplae as that.

  • Gorgioso!!!!!!!
    author: j b nimbl

Each new effort on Manring's part seems to set the new standard in bass performance excellence.

  • Stellar!!
    author: Jeff Dickinson

    Absolutely Brilliant!!

  • Composer & maniac at work - not for the timid
    author: Greg Moorcroft

Brilliant! Michael the composer stretches further than ever. Hair-raising technique always serving the music, never an end in itself. You'll be left scratching your head and wondering, "How did he DO that?" and "What was he THINKING?" Who knows? I'm just glad he's found a form for it. Not to be missed by anyone who likes great bass playing or cool compositions.

  • All that from a bass?
    author: John

I knew Michael manring from Michael Hedges' albun Aerial Boundries and loved his sound. That was a long time ago. This is a must if you want to hear a master musician squeeze everything he can from a bass guitar. Amazing music!

  • Ultimatistic
    author: Kendall

I'm a new Manring listener and actually hadn't heard of him until reading an article with him on the internet. I bought the CD and am now hooked...Michael is a master of the bass and this disc is a great addition to my collection.

  • Michael Manring is one of the greatest musicians of our time!
    author: David

Michael Manring is one of the greatest musicians of our time, that plays his music on a bass! This is Michael's best yet. Solo, without anything else in the way of his beautiful instrument. A must have for any sound or music lover.

  • Fantastic CD. Michaels brings out everything good about music.
    author: John Hulland

I am a long time Michael Manring fan and I would have to agree that this is THEE Manring CD to have. There is no doubt that Micheal has (as he always does) taken music to new place. If you are a instrumental music fan, check this out. You've never heard anything quite like it.

  • Michael Manring is a master of the electric bass!
    author: Mark Roberts

Michael Manring stretches his exploration of the 4-string electric bass guitar beyond what most people believe it is capable of. And he does this without layering tracks...he plays it all straight-up. The textures Michael creates using his hands and every part of the bass enrich each creation. He deftly manages multiple tunings while he plays the song! Because I am a bassist, this is an incredible and inspiring work. Needless to say, it's a regular spin for me. I highly recommend it.

  • it's another exelent cration of michael manring

  • WOW! INCREDIBLE! OUTSTANDING! 100% MANRING!
author: chris bilotti, bass player, 36

Michael does it again, but this time it's all by himself. This cd shines from beginning to end, front to back, and all points in between. Michael,by far, lays waste to any other electric bass player out there, past or present.

  • pure and unadulterated solo-bass mania.
    author: Pete Brunelli

With Soliloquy, Michael Manring has been so kind as to lay his performance skills wide open to the world. No dazzling effects, production, editing... Just dazzling playing, and a very direct representation of what comes out of his instrument. His extrordinary talent and his crafty compositions aside, listen in detail and you can hear the man at work. Not many artists would release an unvarnished recording of their their compositions on their instrument in solo performance. Michael truly stands apart in this regard and I thank him.

  • Wow!
    author: B.J. Bacon

Wow. I don't know what else to say but wow. Great CD, you won't be dissappointed.

  • Another stunning release by Michael Manring
    author: Franz Scheurer

Michael's talent seems to have no bounds. Incredibly textured and harmonic music, created with the most unlikely instrument. This is real surround sound as it resonates in your head and affects the way you feel. A real genius!

  • Great
    author: Parker

CD was delivered quickly and in great shape. And, as usual, Manring doesn't disappoint. New sounds, old sounds with a fresh approach, etc. Its all here.

  • interplanetary bass haiku
    author: tr kelley

Subversively stark solo space ... soaring spirit and muscular soul. Dark moody photography, real-time no-dub playing and understated sonic processing make this a deeply moving trip into sensual minimalism. MM is an artist who uses (mostly fretless) bass guitars to realize and share his creative vision. His superhuman technique never gets in the way, a high art unto itself. i've seen his live show several+ times in the last few years & been waiting for this album. Bingo! Brilliant! Bellisimo! Basso profundo indeed..... :)

  • Probably the greatest instumental album of all time!
    author: Dave Owen

This has to be the greatest instrumental album of all time! Forget the bass for now - this music, rocks, swoons and does just about everthing in between. I've never played an album through four times over in one go ever! I did with this baby! Now consider it's a bass - WOW! This man is a living god. Jaco was the man of his time - Manring is the man of all time!!

  • Amazing Stuff...
    author: Asaf Sinai

this is one of the most amazing cd's i ever heard. it opend my mind as a musician like when i first heard Jaco's solo album.

  • Did you know a bass had so many sounds?
    author: Cooke Harvey

An incredible solo delivery. The tunes are stunning and show the wide spectrum of sound from this beautiful instrument. Michael has elevated the potential of the bass once again and delivered beauty, soul and energy in a totally unique way.

  • Stunning...!!!
    author: Pat Tofield

The CD I've waited for for so long. Surpasses the promise that was hinted at with his previous release - The Book of Flame. Technical mastery of his instrument and profoundly moving.

  • Music...
    author: Adam Keeler

An amazing journey into what can happen with the bass. The CD is full of melodic songs with vocal qualities and then tears into some wild fun with tracks like Greetings Earthings, anyone who wishes to hear some incredible music and playing needs this CD.

  • So much emotion and beauty. What a gift to music lovers.
    author: John Gelfer

The long wait for Michael's next solo CD was worth it. He delivers joy, beauty, whimsey, da funk, and a range of emotions that is stunning. Soliloquy will renew your soul. I bought two copies; one for myself, and one as a gift.

Another interesting, innovative, powerful, and enjoyable cd from Michael. Truly proves the validity of the electric bass as a solo instrument. A great disc!

  • Will Turn Your Head Around
    author: CHINASKI

Manring is able to mesh astounding technique without compromising the soul of a song. This album speaks to your emotions, yet will turn your head around with the technical prowess on display here. The more you listen to the album, the more you find in it, and the more you like it.

Soliloquy truly is a remarkable album; one that transcends the audience’s expectation and experience of the bass. Otherworldy, ethereal, yet strangely inviting.
