Album Notes

The music of New York City based singer/songwriter Marc Alter can be described as poetry & philosophy set against a collage of folk, rock, blues & classical sounds. The search for beauty in life is the catalyst for songs that tell stories colored with dark shades of unrequited love, longing, alienation, as well as social & political injustice.

Born in Central Long Island, Marc was brought up on the music of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Nick Drake, The Beatles, Neil Young & Pink Floyd, Neil Young/CSNY, Cat Stevens, The Velvet Underground, & the Doors. Current influences include Elliot Smith, Radiohead, Ben Harper.

After attending 5 town's music college & Suffolk Community College, he moved upstate to New Paltz where he spent 7 years writing music, fine-tuning his solo performance & collaborating with other musicians. He led two bands: Callisto Square & HotBed. With these bands & solo, he played at such venues as Cabalooza, Oasis, Snug Harbor, Bachus the Apple Wood Restaurant, & The Cubbyhole in Poughkeepsie as well as festivals such as Harvest Fest & Woodstock in Bethyl, NY. He won in a "battle of the bands" competition in New Paltz.

Currently, Marc lives in the East Village & has played venues such as 169 Bar, The Kion Lounge, The Door Lounge, The Pussy Cat Lounge, The Stain Bar, & the Port Authority Concert series. Unafraid to bring his music directly to the people, Marc can sometimes be found playing on the platform at the Union Square subway station & has played open mics at Lilly Coogans & Sidewalk Cafe in the East Village & the Goldhawk in Hoboken. Marc just completed his first album which is now available.
