Marcie Brown is a classical-gypsy-circus-world cellist, who has always enjoyed playing music with anyone and everyone who feels like playing. She got a masters degree in classical cello from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with the prestigious Nathaniel Rosen. She played on the streets of New York City then for eight years, with musicians from different countries and from different walks of life. She sang in a doo-wop group, played music from Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad, and joined a group of Italian gypsies called "I Giullari di Piazza". She also played in symphonies such as the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Houston Pops Orchestra, the Florida Symphony and the Ray Charles Orchestra.
Ms. Brown went back to school to work on a second master's degree in jazz improvisation and composition at the University of Massachusetts. She there made two CD's with Dr. Yusef Lateef--- "The World at Peace", and "Suite Life".
Ms. Brown was with the Cirque du Soleil's "O" show in Las Vegas from 2002-2004, performing over 500 shows with them. She then joined the Tucson Symphony Orchestra for a season before coming to the Bay Area in 2006, where she now performs and teaches. She specializes in Suzuki teaching and in teaching improvisation for string players.
She has performed along the way with some great artists such as Itzak Perlman, Andreas Bocelli, Luciano Pavoratti, Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Richie.
Ms. Brown has two CD's for sale on CD Baby:
"Night of a Thousand Rains" is an eclectic compilation of original compositions recorded in 1998 with brother Terry Brown and some wonderful musicians including Paul McCandless on horns, Bill Douglass on bass, Alan Hall on drums, Mingo Lewis on percussion and John Blake on violin.
"Butterfly Girl" is her new CD, released in January of 2009. This classical-gypsy-circus-world-music includes guitarist Terrence Brewer, percussionists Katja Cooper and Steve LaPorta, vocalists Ramana Vieira and Ana Nitmar, and the Agave String Quintet using arrangements by guitarist Robin Lewis. There is also a guest appearance by pianist Kelly Park, and by six year old Isabelle Brown-Lyden, playing her cello and singing!
