Album Notes

Greetings, and thanks for stopping by!

DISCLAIMER!!!! - buying this CD will not help you see in the dark! I get four or five hits a week thinking this is an instructional CD on using your night vision equipment!! However, it is nocturnal in nature, a musical journey through the mind at night when things are quiet...

What's 'Night Vision' about? You ask...

"Night Vision" is about the special dynamic that exists between mind and music, for the composer, the performer and the audience. All good art has an elemental magic that expresses the spectrum of human emotion and makes it a vehicle for sharing our personal views on the experience of life itself. The painter uses brush strokes, the sculptor chooses clay and stone, the musician plays with sound. Music can speak so much louder than words."

-The process and thoughts behind 'Night Vision'...

It's more than chords and words to me. Most of my music is instrumental, which is something that really intrigued me about some jazz and classical music as a young musician; no words, but the song still works. It's about the melody, the chords, the obvious and the implied movements, '...the artful arrangement of sounds over time...'

Writing instrumental music starts as a meditation, for me anyways. Allowing ideas to ebb and flow; variations, alterations and improvisation is all key to me in the writing process. Awake and Dreaming was a completely improvised piece, taking place at about 3:00AM one winter's night. I kept waking up with the first four bars or so running through my head for at least a week, one night I decided I should just get it out of my head! What you hear is the first run through, then a complimentary nylon string guitar solo, both done in one take. The steel string guitar is tuned CGDGCD in case you wanna give it a try!

Playing music for me, is meditation, whether it's in the composition or recording or performing of it. The musician makes a connection to the listener with sound; that sound can mean many different things to many different people but the intent of the musician and the message of the song, even if it doesn't have words, is still there on a very subtle but very certain level.

I am very drawn to the music of our 'global village' and I have made use of those instruments and sounds that really 'do it' for me; African and Native American drums and percussion, Tibetan bells and singing bowls applied to Arabic scales and Latin rhythms all in the wonderful domain of digital recording.
