I was born in England and my first memory is flying to South Africa. Over the years I have played guitar and been the singer in several different garage bands. Including the psychedelic rock band “Exiled on Earth.”but the multicultural atmosphere of Johannesburg when I was growing up led to me being influenced by all types and styles of music and cultures from Indian traditional music, classical music, jazz, goema (cape traditional music) zulu, and native popular and choral music and African jazz bands including
"The Genuines". "Amapondo"."Savuka", "Kazet" and everything inbetween.
In England i played with “The Velvet Soft Experience” performing around London and the Bucks area but became dissatisfied and wanted to play more tribal/world style instrumental music with a twist of funk so I returned to Africa and decided to study music to help develop my writing.
In ZA I studied classical guitar with Frits Buss and jazz guitar with Johnnie Fourie. Whilst studying music & sound engineering at Allenby music college. At the dawn of the new millennium I taught Guitar/bass & played jazz guitar in the “Nick Collis Trio” at local clubs and restaurants..
In 2003 I moved to Cape Town for two years were I studied drums with Kat at the jazzworkshop and djembe at the drumcafe before moving to England were I live at present.
The album is a collection of instrumentals that have been put on the back burner over the years I have been studying and teaching that I decided to put together and release myself and what you hear are the results I had a lot of fun recording these songs and have a few ideas for some new tracks coming up.
Anyway thanks for listening and best wishes
Marcus.
