Album Notes

Maria Dunn\'s second recording, For a Song, received a 2002 Juno Nomination in the Roots/Traditional Solo category . Produced by Shannon Johnson (producer and performer on From Where I Stand), For A Song features 11 of Maria’s original songs and one traditional Newfoundland song. Musical support was provided by an impressive cast: Canadian Celtic group The McDades, Shannon Johnson (violin), Craig Korth (banjo, guitar, dobro), and with guest appearances by bluegrass band Jerusalem Ridge, Con O’Brien from the Irish Descendants (backing vocals), and Lester Quitzau (dobro). The songs range from The Lingan Strike, a rousing tale from Cape Breton’s labour history, to Take it Easy on Me, a gentle anthem for contemporary society.

The opening song on this CD, \"Maggie Thompson\", was published in Sing Out! Magazine (Spring 2002 Issue).

David Francey (Singer and Songwriter): The CD captures Maria at her best, the songwriting is superb and the performance immediate and strong. Its an excellent body of work, and a pleasure to listen too.

Gregory McGuire, The Casket: Many a singer/songwriter is capable of writing exceptional tunes (although seldom an entire album\'s worth), and there are a number of albums in this genre that are distinguished by exceptional playing and recording. However, seldom do you find both in the same release. Given the Celtic and Maritime nature of many of her tunes, perhaps it is time to make Maria Dunn an honorary member of our community!
