Album Notes

Maria Lithell is a singer- songwriter from Stockholm, Sweden. As a child she was put through classical music school which led her to start off her musical course as a classical singer. For twelve years she has worked as a member of the Royal Opera Choir in Stockholm. Her urge to write and sing her own music, however, made her give up her classical career and start working in her own recording studio. Her lyrics are often poetic and philosophical in their character. Although she has a powerful voice it shows no sign of her classical background. Only her arrangements with bassoon, cello, violin apart from bass, guitar and drums gives the listener an idea of her influences which also is the singer-songwriter tradition. Her music is often descried as melancholical pop/rock. Inspiring artists are P J Harvey, Tori Amos and Björk.

REVIEWS

Shockingly Brilliant
author: Qaphqa
The CD begins with a couple of tracks of rollicking good folk, with Lithell's voice somewhere between Katy Carr and Joni Mitchell, but a lilt all her own. But from track four onwards, the real fireworks begin, with fantastic stringwork and a more hard-edge musical side showing Lithell's real talent and potential. I eagerly await forthcoming CDs, and hope to hear more tracks in Swedish.
