Brilliant, haunting

Incredibly beautiful version of the Sam Cooke classic. McAteer (the female Tom Waits) is breathy and haunting, and partner Bjorn Dahlberg's string quartet arrangement is breathtaking. Amazing how songs can take on new meanings- this was recorded for charity NACOA, who help children of alcoholics....the civil rights context of the original is effortlessly displaced by the alienation of a child with addictive parents. Buy it for NACOA, to hear the rising talent of McAteer, and to glimpse the beauty of the vulnerable as never before

Beatuiful, haunting treatment of the Sam Cooke classic. McAteer (the female Tom Waits) is breathy and lyrical, and partner Bjorn Dhalberg's string quartet arrangement is breathtaking. Uncanny how some songs can take on a whole new meaning...NACOA, the charity for whom this single was produced help children of alcoholics- thee civil rights struggle of the original is effortlessly displaced by the alienation of what it must be like as a child to struggle with addictive parents.
