ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A young lion with the "touch" - Joe Williams, 1995

A rising star on the jazz horizon - Javon Jackson, Blue Note Records, 2001

This exciting Los Angeles native has quickly developed into a premiere jazz artist, being the first to introduce the live American jazz vocal performance to the Russian far east where he appeared on television and concert venues in 1992. He has performed at the Mount Hood Festival of Jazz as well as the Bumpershoot Jazz Festival in Seattle, Washington, the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival as well as jam sessions at the Monterey Jazz Festival.

He has been featured with such jazz giants as Leroy Vinnegar, Billy Higgins, Bennie Maupin, Richie Cole, Red Holloway, and Andrew Hill.

First Things First is his first solo project in which he brings together Blue Note saxophonist Javon Jackson, former Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn bassist Frank de la Rosa, drummer Mel Brown, saxophonist extraordinaire Rob Scheps, trumpeter Thara Memory, pianist Jof Lee, guitarist Dan Balmer, and percussive contributions from Akbar DePriest and Ron Steen.

This is hopefully the first of many... so sit back and enjoy.

Mario DePriest shines in an enticing vocal debut
Mario DePriest is rapidly carving a unique niche in the realm of male jazz singers.
First off, DePriest is blessed with a resonant baritone voice and excellent range. Much in the fading tradition of a Johnny Hartman or an Arthur Prysock, DePriest swims upstream against the current tide of African American male singers who opt for a far less masculine sound.
For example, he takes on an obscure haunting ballad called “Sack Full Of Dreams” and does it so well it makes one wonder why it’s obscure. Trumpeter Thara Memory is at his warmest and creative best as he both accompanies and solos here. Jof Lee’s piano is an equally good fit.
But vocal timbre and range are only half the DePriest story on this release. Utilizing his poetic talents, he creates lyrics for tunes already meriting an instrumental place of honor. “Caught By a Certain Attitude,” a James Williams composition is one given a sparkling new DePriest lyric. Tenorist Javon Jackson also guests on the cut as does Memory.
The other tune for which DePriest wrote lyrics is “It’s Basically Simple,” written by pianist Donald Brown. On the Wayne Shorter classic “Footprints,” DePriest sings existing lyrics but, again uses the vocalese style so well as to place him in rare company with the few others this capable. Akbar DePriest, Mario’s father, is heard on drums, laying down a unique and hypnotic rhythm which ties it all together.
In addition to Javon Jackson, imported from New York for the session, and stalwart Memory, DePriest is joined by reedist Rob Scheps, drummers Mel Brown, guitarist Dan Balmer, bassist Frank De La Rosa and pianist Lee.

Joy Anderson - The Jazz Cafe' Network

I play it everyday, it makes me feel good & smile
One of my favorite songs is "Sack Full of Dreams" it has to be sung just right with the right attitude, feeling and flavor. Mario hits it right on target. "First Things First" is the kind of CD you play all day on repeat and you always hear something new and smooth.........I love it.

The CDs soulful jazz sound enlightens the sense of romance in your heart. It gives the listener the opportunity to extend their notion of fantasy in the world of love, romance, and delight. A great listen to at a quiet gathering or one on one. A great sound filled with thought evoking possibilities.

Still Loving The CD
You still need to autograph my unopened CD that I want to give my daughter so someday I can retire.

First Things First...the perfect prescription for jazz aficionados. This musical gumbo of jazz, straight ahead head bopping beats, soulful saxophone sounds and melodic, fun twists and turns will delight your senses. Just the right soundtrack for a romantic retreat or time alone. A sweet dessert for the ears and a welcome treat for jazz fans craving the classic vibes of yesterday and the silky, sultry vocals of a Joe Williams or Johnny Hartman. First Things First.......a must for your CD jazz collection.
