Floating Around. A beautiful collection of songs penned by Mark Buck and recorded in the last year, 2009. Well worth a listen to hear a guitarist who was described by Grammy winning blues artist John Hammond as ‘Phenomenal’
Fluid guitar playing carries you through the album via jazz, blues, reggae and folk. Jazzy chords start off the first track lazy, floating around the title track passes a nod to the Maytals groove with some laid back wah wah. Just one nylon string acoustic features on Gypsy, a composition that might just have a link with Mark’s family who travelled to this country from Bohemia.
The double bass really sings out on junk shop. ‘I bought a double bass from a junk shop and this song is about that hence the lack of words’. Those that don’t is a song based around the words of Buck’s grandfather Cameron McIntyre. He typed poetry on a huge clunky Underwood in his smoke filled study. Everything he produced was doused in the smell of Players No6. ‘At the end of holidays he would give me a dusty book and an apple with a maggot in it.’
Recorded in his own studio, Mark plays all the instruments, including various guitars both acoustic and electric, pianos, Hammond Organ, harmonica, some beautiful double bass and brushed drums. The album’s flavours of both the blues and jazz capture the true sounds of the instruments and valve amps as organically as possible.

This is amazing! Like a mixture of John Hammond, JJ Cale, Ry Cooder and Tom Waits. I would highly recommend purchasing this and going to see him live - a phenomenal new talent.
