Album Notes

As an accomplished songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, Mark Lane first garnered attention for himself as the creative force behind his old band "The Hoodwinks". Now, it comes as no surprise that Mark is receiving wider recognition as a solo artist with an album as potent, compelling and sophisticated as "Golden State of Mind".

After initially recording five songs with friend and fellow musician Jason Falkner, Mark proceeded to record several more songs in the basement of his Echo Park home. The result was this stunning array of impressionistic songs with lush sonic textures that's now being released in the fall of 2003. Producing the rest of the album in his studio, he also composed all the music and lyrics, and played almost all of the instruments himself. Contributions were also made by D.J. Bonebrake (X, Superstring), Mike Bolger (Brazzaville), Chris Joyner (Soul Asylum, Freewheelers), James King, and Ana Lenchantin.

Mark says the sound of this record was somewhat influenced by the multi-layered sound of albums like George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass", The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds", and "Hawaii" by The High Llamas. "I wanted to make an orchestral sounding rock album. At some point during the recording, I also realized that I was making a sort of West Coast sounding album, hence the title...."

The kind of album that can evoke an involuntary gasp or shriek of "hooray!" With a brilliant jangle reminiscent of the Beatles, melodies as catchy as Billy Joel, mixed in with lightly swaying rock as well as tinges of Wilco, Mark Lane's album calls for a closer listen. No rookie to the game of making music that drives home the sheer enjoyment of music, Mark's professional approach, production and skill for developing a polished project, top to bottom, makes "Golden Sate of Mind" an exceptional disc.
