Marklyn plays music, that much is certain. From playing acoustic guitar while hitchhiking across New Zealand, to rock and roll with True Tale in Southern California nightclubs, from buying and playing a classical guitar in Spain, to the surf rock instrumental sounds of Dude, from the back row in the rhythm section of the Loma Linda Jazz Orchestra, to the party closing sounds of the Wildberrys - the self-proclaimed worst band in the world and we apologize to no one - and now back to solo acoustic guitar, Marklyn continues on a musical travelogue, making up the soundtrack along the way.
Marklyn spent the 90's as a founding member and secondary songwriter of True Tale. True Tale's sound was a unique amalgamation of influences and personal tastes, with big vocal harmonies, punchy guitar, funky bass and unique rhythms forming strong sonic elements. The band listed The Call, John Denver and The Grateful Dead as influences, but Blues, Classic Rock, Folk, New Wave and Alternative were all roots behind their sound. True Tale further defined their sound as melodic alterna-folk-rockish, harmony laden hooky groove pop and we like it. The band always felt that a live setting was the best environment for experiencing True Tale. The band experienced great success in entertaining themselves and even managed a little airplay on a few southern California radio stations.
Along the way side projects and general jamming was always in the works. The surf-guitar instrumental Dude came about as a one-off party band that turned into a run of a few years and a bunch of gigs. Marklyn's interest in surfing and surf music was a perfect fit for Dude and he covered lead and rhythm guitar duties with pleasure.
Sitting in the back, behind the saxophones and trumpets, of the more than 20 piece Loma Linda Jazz Orchestra gave Marklyn an opportunity to work on his jazz interests and furthered his study of rhythm.
Currently Marklyn is working to cover funky rhythmic complexities in a solo acoustic guitar format. The challenge of working in the more exposed solo setting while pushing the acoustic format is enjoyable. This also gives Marklyn a chance to highlight his songwriting and play choice covers.
