Start the day with the dawn patrol, slide a few with friends, take a break after surfing and warm up by the fire. Break out the guitars before the next session to play some music, relax and enjoy. Sun, sand, surf and smiles. Surfing into the sunset as the evening glass-off comes around, then back to the campfire as the stars glitter. Ready for more tomorrow. Beach Days.
"Coolgroove", the first song on "Beach Days", was featured the surf film "On Safari Again" featuring Wingnut, Joel Tudor, CJ Nelson and many other surfers. Steve Cleveland, the film's producer said "Thanks Marklyn. Your music made my movie better." The great response to this song encouraged Marklyn to record an album's worth of surf inspired acoustic music. 14 tracks and several months later "Beach Days" was finshed. The concept behind the album is a day at the beach surfing and playing music with friends. The songs range from solo acoustic guitar to several guitar parts and even ukulele. Most of the songs were written specifically for the album, while a few (Happily Surfing for example) are arrangements of Marklyn's vocal music in an all instrumental setting. Groove and melody are important to Marklyn in the songwriting process and Marklyn's history as a surfer and guitarist in surf music bands added important stylistic influence.

author: bradley vail turnerAs I let this thing run its length in my car on a long drive, it set my imagination on surfing. The sweetest track for me, is Coconut. It's the smell of Hawaiian Tropic, the glow of sundown. Zoom is another. This record is cinematic. Ritmo del Mar would be great in a surf movie as well. Marklyn's Beach Days is the kind of music you hear a couple buddies playing around the campfire. Tasty.

author: zen theatreBeach days is a wondrous take on the sounds of the surf. I sat down towards the end of a Sabbath day and tore open a copy to discover fourteen brave and lovely sounds capes encased in some beautiful photos of the artist, his fabulous instruments, and the beach. I actually expected this album to be an acoustic rendering of (largely due to my run ins with a band called 'Dude' Marklyn once played in) Ventures music or perhaps a re-visitation of Beach Boys / Jan and Dean style tunes in the manner of jerry Garcia ( a la Phish unplugged). Though these would have been and are awesome ideas, Beach Days is neither of those. No, this album is an extremely vulnerable adventure in acoustic reflection. Vulnerable, because as far as I can tell, these 14 pieces were performed by Marklyn who solos and grooves his way into your soul over tune appropriate accompaniment which is dead on (no pun intended) tune appropriate. This collection both surprised and informed me. You see, the sound track in my head when I (try) to surf is something like Sound Garden and ‘My Wave'. Marklyns tracks, however seem to be all about George Harrison’s. 'Here comes the Sun.' If that is what accomplished surfing is all about; I’m ready to try again. The Sounds on this album are well mastered and candidly performed on beautifully timbered acoustic instruments. That is to say the songs you hear on this disc are pristine representations of what the performer wants you to hear as he performs. And that, ladies and gents is a very difficult aim to achieve. As such, Beach Days is a precursor for and a model of a special kind of genre for the self produced. For now, call it label independent. Actually, this model is a sub genre for label independence. This album actually was pressed under something called MR Records. Someday musicians will eschew the need for labels at all and i believe that this type of recording will become more common in this wild new era of non- corporate self production, pod casting and web / satellite radio. So, give this disc a spin. It plays well at the end of; or anytime on, any day. -Chico
