Submitted for your approval: one Marlin Brackett, a general contractor hailing from Marietta, who has been writing songs on the side for some two and a half years now. His first Open Mic at Eddie's Attic was just over two years ago, not long after he changed his focus from playing guitar to writing. Listening to good songwriters, he said, has always been one of his great loves, and Eddie's Attic seemed like a natural environment for him.
Brackett won first place and the weekly $60 prize this past Monday. He commented on the effect of having different judges from week to week: "Sometimes I feel like the judging is partial, sometimes I feel like it's good. Two weeks ago, I thought they did a real good job judging."

He continued, "Jess [electric guitarist Jess Hopkins] and I were practicing for that night, and we just felt like we had a crack at it, so we picked some powerful-type songs. He was accompanying me, and I kind of pushed him hard, and we did it."

On June 5, Brackett will wade back into the fray for the semiannual Open Mic Shootout. The $1,000 prize would go a long way toward financing one of his dreams-recording an album of his music, which he describes as "original countryrockahillbillybluzegrass." Pretty much says it all, doesn't it? "The musical roots that I have from my dad-he played a mix of country and pop, mostly country. I like bluegrass, so I play some of that, but I also like most types, mainly acoustic," he mused.
