The Marlin Spikes hopes you will enjoy this CD, as much as we enjoyed making it. For those modern music land lubbers with their fancy iPods who have never listened to historical music, listen closely to this CD and try to imagine yourself singing these songs on wooden ships far from family and loved ones. Imagine hauling heavy sails in the hot sun, with sweat dripping from your brow. Imagine dreaming under an unfamiliar star-filled night. Imagine the discipline, the hard life, and the occasional good times…as you imagine and immerse yourself in our music, we hope you’ll begin to share our fascination with the history and lore.
This CD attempts to recreate the forebitters, shanties, and sea songs of the antebellum navy. We did our best to recreate the sounds that would have been
available in the 19th century. Although every effort was made to create authentic era music, we did use some creative license in some of the songs - forgive us.
