notes

You know that song that comes along once in a blue moon and takes your breath, and steals your heart, away? Well, this is that song.

- Dan Cairns (Sunday Times)

Martha Wainwright combines her intimate familiarity with folk/rock tradition with a youthful sense of adventure. Whether singing dramatic ballads or breezy pop, she is always flush with character. She is at once - wise, vulnerable and revealing. She delivers a solid musical strength to her material with a voice that can break your heart.

Martha Wainwright is the daughter of Kate McGarrigle of the renowned folk duo Kate & Anna McGarrigle and singer/ songwriter Loudon Wainwright III. Growing up in a family where music was the central focus, she sang on stage and in the studio from a very early age. She began writing songs and performing in clubs on her own since she was a drama student in her native Montreal.

Until this year she has played mostly a supporting role in her musical family, as the featured backing vocalist for her brother Rufus Wainwright's widely acclaimed recordings as well as on many of the tours supporting them. She appears onstage with the McGarrigles whenever possible and recently stunned a huge crowd in Brooklyn's Prospect Park with her beautiful and heartfelt covers of two songs by Leonard Cohen.

Now based in New York City, Martha plays regularly with her own band. She has gathered an ardent and growing following in the city's clubs and has been embraced by the downtown pop music world. She is currently recording her first full length album. This past July, Martha was cast by Martin Scorsese in the role of a 1940's torch singer for his forthcoming film, "The Aviator," starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett.

Martha continues to shine as an artist with her keen insight, originality and just enough of an edge that makes everything she does memorable.

  • raw, beautiful, clever lyrics: showing promise
    author: Kim Winston

Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole is the stand out track on this album, the others take more time to grow. A bold title with clever, beautiful lyrics. She has a raw, soulful voice which she uses to full effect on this track. Despite being armed with just simple chords on an acoustic guitar (& bass) she manages to superbly build up emotion in waves before finally emmiting the explosive expletitive crescendo! Although it's a cliche (and notably an accolade usually only afforded to men) Martha Wainwright has touches of Jeff Buckley and I hope this quality is something she continues to explore.

  • Best of the Wainwright Family
    author: SarahBee

I think that this CD positions Martha as the most talented vocalist of the Wainwrights. The honesty and vulnerability in her voice invite the listener to share not only in the lyrics and the music, but the emotional journey of each song. Brilliant artist who will keep on rising.

Shades of Leonard Cohen meeting Marianne Faithful at coffee shop for words and caffeine fueled dreams.Joined by punked out, elderly, wrinkled, salted, green oceaned makeup faced Kate Bush look alike to give her beauty intellect tips and FIVE STARS for the record!Review coming soon in section T of of Newstands on the web whose origins are unknown pumpkin patches along the pacfic coast highway. Marianne spills her coffee in laughter hearty like a cough expelling cold germs appreciating Martha's sensual word flow and her plasma on the tracks moments. It isn't 1975, but even the Man from Hibbing might dig it?? More then good genes live in these songs and Martha but genetics play a role in her perspectives, talents and dark moments as for us all, but that can been seen only by the real inner circle and I'm an outsider sitting inside my room waiting for coffee to brew listening to pieces of her songs and attempting this crossword puzzled, CDBABY computer review. Watch this girl, she's going places and already has, more then 2 minutes of fame knocking on her door, I suspect she won't be following any MTV marketers playbook! The inner voice you hear, is the voice that will take her down expected and unexpected moments!Enjoy this special time with her.

  • Lovely debut!
    author: Martin Haring

Lovely first Cd. I saw her perform in Paradiso with the same songs. Voice looks lik tammy Wynette, but raw version. Martha keep on rocking!

  • 'How Soon' will we here more of your musical talent??
    author: Daniel S. Green

As a debut author, songwriter, artist, and grand nephew of Jack Owens, and nephew of the Famous Peanut Man at Dodger Stadium Roger Owens, by the way, I can tell you it's safe to assume that Jack would be very proud of your cover of "How Soon." No doubt he would be thrilled at being serenaded by your unique and emotion-filled voice the same way he used to flutter female pulses so many decades ago.

  • Great individual Voice

I saw Martha supporting brother Rufus in UK and just had to buy her EP (unfortunately sold out at gig). I can't wait for the full album and Martha touring in her own right.

  • Bloody mother fucking beautiful

Martha and Rufus....what more can I say?

  • A gorgeous follow-up!
    author: Todd Brownlie

Some time back, Rufus suggested that I give his sister Martha's first CD a listen to, since I'm been a fan of Tanya Donnelly and so many other female rock/folk singers out there. Previous to her first album, the only time I'd ever heard her sing was in his band and on the acclaimed McGarrigle Hour recording. Her vocals were superb and emotional... I fell in love immediately. BMFA is a much more straight-foward album compared to her first self-titled debut. It's raw, and filled with even more emotion, although disappointingly short. Perhaps this EP is just what she needs to really get her foot in the door and have her voice be heard. Packed with musical talent and muse, she deserves more recognition.

  • Cor Blimey Guv what a corker

    Stunned and amazed....

  • Absolutely Wonderful
    author: Cassandra

There is so much emotion put into such a (unfortunately) short cd. The only thing I regret is not picking up a copy sooner.

  • My socks have been knocked off.
    author: Anne

I haven't been this impressed by a CD in a long time. Where has this woman been, who has been keeping her from me? This is a heartwrenchingly beautiful and powerful album. I can't recommend it highly enough.

worth the money i spent on it. her voice is unique and wonderful. just like her brothers. :D

  • Outstanding performance. Full album now please!
    author: Martin Purssell

Yet again, we're treated to some virtuoso performances, showcasing that great expressive voice. Can't wait for a full album, as these 5 songs leave us hankering for more!

  • Congratulations Martha!
    author: suzy

Wonderful, unique musicianship here- I love Martha's voice, her versatility in style and ability to communicate sincere emotions. I'm really looking forward to a full length CD or a chance to see a live solo performance. Thanks CD Baby & Martha Wainwright!

  • Excellent

Its been a long wait but well worth it...excellent CD.

  • Mother Fucking Bloody Great
    author: Amy

I had the pleasure of watching Martha open up for Rufus in Seattle in winter 2003, so I had heard a few of the songs on Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole in advance. She said then that she'd throw an EP up on CDBaby soon. It took several months, but it was worth waiting for her to get her shit together. The title track is the best, but I'm growing to love the other four as well. In particular, "I will Internalize." This CD is a perfect little sample platter of Martha's immmense talents. Her family be damned, the girl is good and folks should do themselves or someone they love a favor and buy Mother Fucking Bloody Asshole.

  • How could you be surprised?
    author: Joe

This is dynamite stuff, but how could you be surprised when you consider Martha's bloodlines. I am wondering if she, like her mom and aunt, might do something in French. In any language this gal rocks.

  • great confirmation
    author: Andrea

After her first self-titled EP (1999) and the "Factory" EP (2002), Martha Wainwright confirms her talent with this new EP "BMFA", with 4 beautiful new songs and a wonderful cover of "How Soon" with a bare interpretation for voice and piano as realized for the song "Bye, Bye Blackbird" in the former EP "Factory". Martha is one of the best songwriters of her generation and it's a pity that only a few people know her music. I hope she can realize as soon as possible her first full lenght record.

  • Is the wrong Wainwright getting all the attention?
    author: motty

On the third EP from Martha she's still trying to find her voice and style. This one taps into emo and grrrl rage. Martha has so much raw talent and such a captivating voice that it's a gas just watching her try on new outfits, even if they don't always suit her. And I for one get much more pleasure from Martha detailing her journey as she finds herself as an artist than I do listening to Rufus go on and on and on abut how hard he's trying to throw all his gifts away.

  • friggin' good, but what would you expect?
    author: future landfill

She's such a talent, hmm? I would have given it 5 stars but the damn thing is too short - let's have another half-dozen tunes just like these. I especially liked the Mary Margaret O'Hara warbles in a couple of the songs. If I didn't have so many other good recordings to play, I put this one up a lot more...

  • author: cc

Terrific -- can't wait for Martha to put out a full-length album, though these five songs really are wonderful, I play them over and over and can't get enough. The title track has really grown on me, but "When the Day is Short" got stuck in my head from the first listen. "It's Over" is another good "creeper," kind of an oddity on first listen but again, it really grows on you.

  • Fantastic
    author: Anthony

I almost picked up this CD when I saw Rufus Wainwright in concert. They were selling it then for fifteen dollars... and for some reason I didn't buy it, and felt like a total idiot forever afterwards - until I found it here (and cheaper) on CD Baby! Thank you so much for carrying this excellent and beautiful CD. In addition to the great music and perfectly emotional voice of Martha, the CD came so quick and was in perfect condition. I did not expect this kind of service at all from an online store... thanks CD Baby!

  • Beautiful!
    author: Thalli

Brilliant. I have seen Martha twice in concert with her brother, Rufus, and this album is a beautiful representation of her talents and capibilites. The only negative thing that I have to say is that it is so short! Also, having a recording of her take on Barbara's "Dis, Quand Reviendra-Tu?" would have been the sweetest icing on the cake (She sang it at one of the concerts I attended and stole the show). Regardless, this album is a must for anyone who is a fan of the Wainwright family, or anyone who just loves gritty, heart-felt, soulful music.

  • ...from angst to anticipation
author: Ray from Dago Red Music

I must start this review by saying that I was more intrigued by the CD title than by the pedigree of the artist. But knowing from whence she came, made me eager to give it a listen. Martha Wainwright was spawned from a truly eclectic gene pool. I've been a fan of her father, Loudon Wainwright III since I was a music student in the 60's & 70's, as I was of her mother, Kate McGarrigle and her sister Anna. Martha seems to have drawn heavily from her father's influence as a wry, tongue-in-cheek songwriter. She moves from angst to anticipation in this EP, making her point, and her feelings known in very short order with B.M.F.A., the title cut. Continuing with I Will Internalize, she takes the next step in the degeneration of a relationship, denial and self-deprecation. Hope and acceptance come to the forefront with When The Day Is Short. It's Over takes us into the realm of the rebound relationship and the realization that we shouldn't look for love when we're at an emotional ebb. The EP concludes with How Soon, written by Carroll Lucas & Jack Owens, first performed by Owens, but made famous by Frank Sinatra. Martha makes it her own; a sweet, melodic prayer and for the return of the spirit of true love. This is one of the best EP's by any artist in recent memory. It brilliantly bridges the gamut between angst and anticipation. I'm anxiously awaiting the release Martha's full length CD later this year.

  • This is a fabulous album - the Martha Wainwright we love!
    author: Tamara Johnston
  • Silk handkerchief
    author: greygardens

For long-time fans, BMFA is confirmation, for new listeners, a revelation. I love the raw treatment she's given It's Over; the perfect mixture of her heart-wrenching lyrics and fierce delivery. When The Day Is Short takes me right back to NYC and happy memories. I'm so thrilled for her and this release. Martha's voice is a long, silk handkerchief - full and billowy in the middle and gently twisted at either end. She places her voice in the generous folds but she also travels down to the points. I've never known a female singer who can reach that barely audible delicacy right down to the last letter and without it sounding forced for effect. Couple it with her compositions which are themselves things of sheer beauty, and well, she ought to be a star.

  • brilliant & original songs from an amazing singer/songwriter
    author: J. Daman Hoffman

From the opening acoustic strum of "BMFA," you know you're in store for a fantastic musical awakening. Then comes her voice...mesmerising, passionate, intense. It will at once lift you to a higher plane, bring a long-lost smile to the surface & break your bloody heart. "I Will Internalize" brings on the heart-break, but then gives such sweet relief with its gorgeous chorus. "When the Day Is Short" picks the tempo up & rocks out a little. If this were a more righteous world, this song would be all over the radio! The atmospheric "It's Over" showcases some of Martha's AMAZING vocal histrionics. Just try to keep up with her, it's like a rollercoaster. At this point on the EP, most listeners will be absolutely comatised. It's just sooooo much beauty to behold in such a weary, wretched world. But it's not over yet. Next we get a sweet little dilly of a standard, "How Soon." No one can interpret a classic like Martha & this one brings it all back home. What a gem! This disc flat out refuses to leave my player. You have to buy it. You will never regret it for a second.

  • there is no sameness here
    author: CHINASKI (www.cdbaby.com/cd/chinaski)

Her voice is smooth, then husky, cooing then yelping with surprising passion. This album combines the most playful elements of rock, pop and folk with just a twinkle of cabaret. There is no sameness here, each song has it's own distinctive edge. You get a sense from this album of a real, not simulated experience.

  • Stunning
    author: rachrumoz

The vulnerability her lyrics express, render the listener sympathetically but willingly captivated by Martha's music and voice. In contrast though, the other vast trait to this CD, is Martha's strength and confidence, which empowers the listener and reiterates this lady's talent. I can't wait to hear more from her. This CD is worth buying if you value fantastic musical talent. This as-yet-undervalued musician is one to look out for. Relaxing and enticing...breathtakingly stunning! Thank you Martha and CD Baby!

  • Wonderful
    author: Stephanie

absolutly brilliant. It arrived 4 days after I ordered it which is a better service than I would receive from a company in the UK. The CD its self is amazing, she has a beautiful voice which makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. I cannot wait for the full length CD.

  • Martha Wainwright is incredibly talented and refreshing.
  • Totally eclectic, totally original, worth the long wait since her first EP
    author: Andrew

It's been a long time since Martha's last EP and this one doesn't disappoint. Every song on the EP is totally different from the next and by the time it's done you've heard some angry folk, some far out rock and some cabaret-worthy tunes. Great voice, amazing lyricist, 100% an original.

  • a very pleasant shock
    author: roland bowman

a very pleasant shock. I havn't heard any thing like it in 23 years. The form is tight and melodies intoxicating!!
