THE FIRST FIVE is the brand new CD by singer/songwriter Mary Abraham, released on her own A Plank in the Eye Music record label. Drawing from such a diverse well of influences (Johnny Cash, Morrisey, Cat Stevens, Marvin Gaye, Bjork, Rufas Wainwright and The Pretenders) has no doubt contributed to her sparkling alternative pop sound. And it certainly hasn't hurt her songwriting either, as Mary has won countless Honorable Mention Awards in the 2003 and 2004 Billboard Song Writing Contests, and was the Runner-Up in the 2004 Recording Academy's Grammy Demo Review & Contest. Mary Abraham is a female singer/songwriter who merges light pop-rock with AAA and some of the twang that Nashville is renowned for crafting. With that in mind it may surprise you that she's from Motor City. Her vocals are pretty spot-on and boast a thick range. The songwriting is pretty killer with influences that can easily point towards Natalie Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs. Good stuff.

Abraham has been able to cut five tracks on "The First Five" that show essentially different styles of her music and this EP is a great start to what will hopefully be a long and fruitful music career. Any of these five cuts could be singles; let's hope that Abraham has a full album that works on the same high level.
