notes
"Better Than You" is a compilation of the most honestly written songs you'll ever find. Tight harmonies and solid melodies take you through a musical journey.
Mary began her transition from a tone-deaf teenager to a singer/songwriter in 1996. Her mom brought home an old, beaten-up guitar from a pawn shop and thought, "Someone will get some use out of it." It sat for almost a year when one night, Mary picked it up and started trying to play. Mary fiddled around with it every day more and more, then she begged her dad for a better guitar.
For Christmas, he took her down to the local music store and bought a black and white, electric guitar and a little amp. To some, it wasn't the greatest guitar on earth, but to Mary it was everything. She played every day (well just about) and took lessons for about six months. When she learned the basics, she quit the lessons and started teaching herself. A few years later, she began writing, and eventually recording.

Deeply felt lyrics and exquisite vocals
author: Rob WorkmanWhether the affecting lyrics are based on personal experience or are from imagined (or anticipated) adventures and misfortunes, Mary Hoffman gives these universal feelings a sympathetic voice. Let's hope for her sake it's the latter, since no one deserves the heartache of "Say Goodbye" or "Change Your Mind". But it's not all woeful for Mary. She challenges her romantic offender to see the error of his ways with "Will I Still Be Around" and finally discharges the poor soul with "Better Than You". While most of the album is a pleasant montage in the pop-folk idiom, Mary isn't afraid to rock with the driving and tough-sounding "For the Ride". A multi-instrumentalist, Mary plays guitar, drums, bass and keyboards which gives the album a singular sensibility and charm all but absent from the big label divas crowding the charts today.
