notes

"I love the fall in Wisconsin. It's the crisp air, the wool sweaters and turning leaves, I guess. But it's also the still, quiet nights- standing outside under the trees, looking through the nearly bare branches. That bittersweet feeling that you've got to savor - winter's coming, but not just yet."

Mary Kelly's fondness for her Midwestern roots and its seasonal vagaries provide tacit inspiration for nearly all of her music. Sharpening her spirit in Los Angeles, San Francisco and points in between, she continues to carry the sentiment of the Midwest with her, wherever she goes.

After moving to Los Angeles at the age of 19, Mary jumped into the coffee house music scene, singing her heart out to all who would listen. In 1991, she put out her first CD, Lonely Town, on the independent label, Woodenship Records. It was in L.A., of all places, that Mary became enamored with Irish music and the accordion, which became an integral part of her set. Featured on KPFK's Folkscene with Howard and Roz Larman, Don McNatt's "Writers in the Round" as well as the anthem singer at a 1993 Dodger game, Mary continued to showcase in and around Los Angeles until it was time to head east for a dose of home. In Wisconsin, Mary co-founded the band, Emmettville. Deeply rooted in acoustic folk, Emmettville released Down Home Town, opening up for such acts as Los Lobos, Peter Himmelman and Marshall Crenshaw. "Hotel Milwaukee", a Wisconsin Public Radio show, would be her last stop before continuing on out west.

In a few short months, Mary began scratching out the tunes for her latest release. Her breakthrough CD, Untied, is a lyric and musical tapestry that draws on her life's lessons and showcases her rich voice, warm piano and haunting accordion lines. From the guarded optimism of her title track, to the sardonic undertone of "A Little Prayer" to the melancholy of "Deepest Part", Untied offers a glimpse into Mary's unfolding spirit- and there's more to come.

As Mary continues to play in and around San Francisco, she's already working on her next release. Until then, you can preview her latest songs live at her next gig. See you there.
