Album Notes

"Stand out tunes include Mary's take on Swannanoa Tunnel, an old English work song made popular by Bascom Lamar Lunsford, along with two original tunes, Andrew Jackson Go Back Home and Hunchback Whiskey, that she plays on her Wunder Hunchback fretless gut string banjo. Mary also has the enviable ability to take an old chestnut and make it hers, a la her double-tracked version of Golden Slippers...along with Soldier's Joy and Angeline."

A Secret life of banjo
author: Antony
Bought this on a whim and wasn\'t sure at first when I saw how short the play time was compared with a lot of CDs these days. Having said that, this is a gem. As an englishman who fancies trying to make sense of a banjo, I found this selection inspiring. You won\'t find anything too flashy or demanding here, but you will find subtle and beautiful music. It stands up to repeated listening, it is surprisingly varied and the playing is spot on. The cover/sleeve is a bit basic, but it does give you the banjo tunings for the different tracks, which is very useful. I would heartily recommend this CD to anyone who wants to play or find out more about clawhammer or old-timey banjo.

mary's playing always moves me
author: madkelt2004
as a new convert from Scruggs style banjo to clawhammer I'm trying to gobble up as much Old Time Music as I can, listening to different artists to hear the differeent styles of playing. This is an excellent CD towards that end. What can I say about Mary's music? I love it! Just pure unadulterated banjo!

I love this record!

Great banjo tones, wonderful relaxed rhythms, everything that I want to hear in a solo banjo CD. Beautiful songs, including the originals. Mary Z. Cox gets to the heart of what is essential in these tunes without cluttering them up with excessive showmanship or playing at a frantic pace. Great stuff!

This CD is great Banjo playing!
author: Matthew Brasel
This is one of my favorite banjo CDs. I like OT Banjo solos rustic and yet refined and this is it. Wayfaring Stranger is my favorite track.
