Compelling Work of Art
author: Ana Eder-Mulhane
Angela Masciale's CD of 13 orginal songs "Take Back the Land" is a compelling work of art. Her songs are rich: at times searing, at times yearning, at times matter of fact, at times light and humorous, and they make for powerful relevant storytelling. Angela's beautiful, muscular and complex guitar playing matches her powerful lyrics strength for strength, keeping the listener riveted and involved. The songs are lyrical, descriptive, bold and thoughtful. They deal fiercely and tenderly with the seemingly broad issues of homelessness, war ("Shoebox Shelter", "Casualties of War"), social justice and injustice, inferility ("It's OK Mother"),love ("Machu-Picchu Quest" and "Giving All to Enhance Each Other"), the misuse of our ecological envirmonment ("Take Back the Land"), and turns them into poignant, personal experiences. Angela's humor, sense of fun and gentle mockery of our stress filled existences are delights found amoungst her pieces in this collection with her songs "Petite Woman Blues" and "Breathe". Raymond Gonzalez, a gifted guitarist, adds guitar and mandolin on a many of her songs. Adam Zampino enhances the song "Casualties of War" with the keyboard and Jambe. The striking slate sculpture of Earth Mother, by Daniel Zampino provides a vital, raw and lovely image on this wonderful CD cover. It is a joy to hear this work for the first time, and then it is an ever enriching experience as you relisten and revisit her passionate words and indelible melodies.

With Take Back the Land, Angela has crafted an extraordinary collection of songs that evoke vivid images of a planet that is both beautiful and endangered. Her ability draw the listener into the environment that she creates with her beautiful voice and contemplative guitar work is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell’s first records. But this is music that is unlike anything I have ever heard before. It is music for the soul!

This is a beautiful recording. Angela's writing here moves seamlessly from playful to soulful to acutely observant and introspective. Her voice is enchanting. The musicianship is extraordinary and the songs are delicately crafted. But to me what comes through the clearest in this collection of songs is her warm and wonderful, compassionate heart.
