SUE MASKALERIS is a singer/keyboardist, composer/lyricist and arranger/producer of jazz and Brazilian jazz, who has performed extensively throughout the New York area as well as abroad. Sue placed 2nd worldwide in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Composition Competition in 1998 for her song, "Scat!" and that same year took First Prize in the Billboard Song Contest, world category, for her "No, But I Wish..." That song recently reached #1 worldwide on the jazz vocal charts of mp3.com.

She has won eleven Bllboard Certificate of Achievements for her songs. She was also a winner in JAZZIZ magazine's "Keyboards on Fire!" Talent Search judged by Dave Brubeck and Bob James. Her self-produced instrumental "Pajamasamba" appeared on their CD sampler and website as well, and in their 1995 special quarterly issue. Sue has also won ASCAP Popular Awards annually for a decade.

Two of her songs received nationwide airplay covered by other artists: "Younger Dreams" by Nancy Monroe (MJA Records), and "Tom'samba" by Tom Briggs (SaturnDisc). Sue also sang, played and arranged the latter, and appeared on another cut. The CD received glowing reviews in Cadence and Pulse magazines. She also sang vocalese on John Shaw's "The Water Gypsies" (Aisha Records)with Ignacio Berroa, Don Friedman and Guilherme Franco.

Many of Sue's songs have been aired on WBGO-FM and WNYE-FM, as well as WKCR, WNYC, WFMU, WSAV and WPKN. She was also profiled on cable tv programs "The Best Kept Secret," "Success Stories," and "What's Ailing/Healing America."

Outstanding artist, outstanding album! I had the good fortune to jam with Sue back in our teens, and I was amazed at her abilities then. It's incredible to hear what she's become!

I didn't know what to expect from this recording, so I was truly surprised by the inventiveness, quality, groove, production values, etc. - Sue is a MASTER of so many styles with prodigious talents as songwriter, singer, pianist, arranger, producer ! And she's joined by some very talented other musicians. I can only echo the accolades of other reviewers - This is one of my favorite new CDs of 2003.

well written, very well performed, varied and interesting...you won't believe it
author: Carmen Miller
Unbreakable Heart is well-written, very well performed, varied and interesting. You won't believe it's a debut release! Sue wrote, arranged and produced most of the songs, as well as performed on keyboards and vocals. The style is smooth...not like smooth-jazz, rather it has the smoothness you get from a good Basia or Jarreau tune. Pajamasamba, a Corea-esque joyride, immediately showcases Sue's adeptness with the piano...and her ability to scat. On the second tune, Scat! Sue is joined here by vocalist extraordinaire Mark Murphy for this swinging romp. The title tune Unbreakable Heart kicks it up a notch, highlighting her beautiful voice. On the bluesy Child of Three, co-produced by Michal Urbaniak, Sue pulls out her [synth-] harmonica and gets down and gritty with it. Mischief Night is a steamy tune where Sue gets back to the vocal storytelling (hello Ella). Her enunciation and emotional style shine in the interplay with Darmon Meader's sax riffs. The Love Within slows things up a bit, while keeping the mood light and uptempo. It is a good cover [by Bob Albanese], and shows her abilities, but doesn't have quite the punch of the Maskaleris-written tracks. I Can't Cry Over You Any More, featuring Michal Urbaniak on violin, brings back the dynamic flow. Delgado/Sonhos Reciclados is a smooth Latin-influenced piece keeps the feel of the CD intact. No, But I Wish...is straight out of Rio de Janeiro. Never to Learn/Nunca Aprender slows thing down at the end, a sweet finish to a joyous ride. Unbreakable Heart was a pleasant surprise...a keeper.

Unique & amazing artist, deep groove, brilliant composer/arranger/musician,w/ su
author: Eve Zanni, Jazz vocalist
This CD bowled me over completely! And this effect kept deepening, in subsequent hearings! The title track, Unbreakable Heart is a masterpiece, in every way; performance, composition, musicianship, arrangement. The lyrics are deceptively simple, yet contain a subtle poetic wit. I found this to be the case on many of the tunes on this CD; at first you are impressed with the entire presentation, but then the significance of the lyric and their artistic subtleties, double entendres, start to emerge. No, But I wish, is another favourite of mine, with its odd meter, so perfectly suited to the lament and irony in the lyric. Scat! A Love Sublime, are more examples of masterful lyric writing (substance!) supported by the expertise of a brilliant composer/arranger/musician(form!) Yet, throughout all, there is a deep groove to feel and move with. I can't wait to hear more from this unique and amazing artist.
