Album Notes

MATT COUGHLIN, from the town of Belgrade, Montana, has called the Puget Sound area home for the last 6 years. He graduated from PLU in 2003 with a music degree, and then went to work slinging pies at a local restaurant and playing music to pay the bills. Matt plays solo often, but also has a band that plays just as much. This flexibility has given Matt several different venues to play, from coffee shops to rock bars.

The mattcoughlin band puts the talented Sam Collins on the bass, Dalton Shotwell on the skins, and Matt on guitar and vocals. From time to time they have a few friends come along for the fun, too. Their original music draws from several influences, blending folk, rock and roll, alt country, and even a little funk and jazz to create smooth melodies over a solid groove. The resulting sound is tight and technical, but filled with soul.

Since the debut on the Jazzbones stage in January of 2005 in Tacoma, Matt has made a name for himself as a singer songwriter in the Tacoma/Seattle area. He has been quoted as an "up and comer" by the Weekly Volcano's Ginger Knoxx, who says to "expect big things". In the past year, Matt has opened for Martin Sexton, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Storyhill, The Paperboys, Vicci Martinez, The Jude Bowerman Band, Doxology, Christopher Cross, Curt Kirkwood, and The Eric McFadden Trio. Several Seattle/Tacoma stages have hosted Matt’s music, including Jazzbones, ToST, The Triple Door, and the Nectar.

Last summer, the mattcoughlin band formed to put together a few shows and record an EP. Under the production of Zach Varnell (Weather, The Nouveau Rich) the group put together an impressive first recording called “Let it Go” at Spectre Studios in Tacoma. Matt also recorded a second EP on a more acoustic note with Chris Cunningham (Storyhill) entitled, “It’s About Time” at Hyalite Studios in Bozeman, MT. Both are slated for release March 2006 on Blue Goat Records.

More information on the mattcoughlin band as well as his solo material can be found at www.myspace.com/mattcoughlin and soon at www.mattcoughlin.com.

What I liked about the CD is that all the tracks come across as unique yet they are flowing together well. The fact that Matt is making quality, original compositions with meaningful lyrics makes it even more entertaining. The overall sound is excellent! I'm looking forward to his next release.

in just 5 songs, matt and the band have managed to take listeners through a world of different moods, both in the variety of styles and the stories in the lyrics, even referencing bob marley on one track. all of it is held together by matt's soulful approach and the band's climatic builds.
