Singer/songwriter Nathalie Matteau has been performing in Montréal venues, bars and cafés such as Else’s, Barfly, Jupiter Room, Café Utopik and Casa del Popolo, Sala Rossa, Main Hall for the past five years. At 18 she left her hometown Shawinigan and moved to Montréal where she studied singing at l’École de Musique Vincent d’Indy and McGill University. Her interest in theatre and film also led her to study film production at Concordia University and acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York City. Her studies in the arts (music, film, theatre) and her work as a record dealer for many years allowed her to experience music every day and to constantly make new musical discoveries. Her principal influences are Kurt Weill and his wife, the German singer Lotte Lenya, Tom Waits, Marianne Faithful, Marlene Dietrich, tango music and many, many more. Here’s a a review:
…Nathalie Matteau’s music is introspective and lost somewhere in time. One recognizes strong influences from Kurt Weill and the decadent Bauhaus creative movement, in vogue between the two World Wars…very intimate and full of potential.
