Album Notes

In his new CD Passport, Matt adds depth and dimension to his signature jazz blend by drawing upon the rich musical traditions of India, Brazil, and Spain.

Passport's groove was crafted in Rio De Janeiro, New York and Chicago. This new project features the contributions of four Grammy award winners, including harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones) and 6-time Grammy winner Paul Wertico (Pat Metheny Group) on drums.

The global texture of Passport was further cultivated by Indian vocalist Satya Gummuluri who sings in Urdu, Hindi, Sanskrit and Punjab. Djavan's pianist Renato Fonseca, guitarist Neal Alger (Blue Note), pianist Ben Lewis, guitarist Steve Ramsdell, drummer Jeff Fortin and Brazilian guest artists Thiago Silva, Felipe Pinaud, Enrique Band are featured as well.

Matt's 10 new compositions and arrangements showcased on Passport are an ambitious modern musical effort revealing exciting and cutting-edge cross-cultural concepts.

What fusion should be
author: braingarden
I'm not ordinarily a huge fan of fusion, but this CD won me over quickly. Passport does not waste any time getting cooking with killer tracks like "Arcos da Lapa" and especially "Lisboa" right out of the gate. The album is literally a world tour from the comforts of your own home, car or iPod, with strong contributions from every instrument, a great rhythm section, and highlighted by Satya Gummuluri's dynamic vox, her Hindi/Sanskrit/Urdu transcending cultures, genres, and styles. The album closes strongly with "C and D Groove" and Howard Levy bringing it all home with some funky riffing on harp. This album is highly recommended!
