Fluid technical command, natural expressivity and a remarkable versatility distinguish guitarist Matthew Greif. Matthew is the newest member of the Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. He has performed and/or recorded with a wide range of musicians, including classical guitarist Scott Tennant and the legendary Chet Atkins. Previously, Matthew was a member of the Falla Guitar Trio.

tres magnifique

Permanent transition is exactly that--a transition of a classically trained guitarist into the limitless world of jazz. Beginning with Diferencias Diferentes which was written for him by Dusan Bogdanovic, the transition between verbatim notes required by the composer and Matthew's own improvisations takes the listener on a journey never until now traveled. Some jazz standards as well as free form improv songs follow (some of these are duets with A York and D Bogdanovic) as the middle part of the CD. To close it off is a very well executed Koyunbaba (C Domeniconi) and finally another original composition written for Matt: Tennessee by Miguel del Aguila. This last piece was originally composed on a cheap pawn-shop guitar by Miguel del Aguila, and it is the composer's lone guitar work. However, judging from Matthew's interpretation it sounds like it came from a well versed guitarist. Perhaps it is precisely Greif's touch that gives life to this last piece as well as the rest of the CD. I strongly recommend it to any classical and/or jazz lover.
