Album Notes

Percussionist-composer Matt Weston has collaborated with: Arthur Brooks, Bill Dixon, Kevin Drumm, Paul Flaherty, Charles Gayle, Milford Graves, Le Quan Ninh, Bob Marsh, Jim O’Rourke, William Parker, Ken Vandermark, Jack Wright, and many others. His live performances have set a new standard for solo percussion. He has performed at venues as varied as the 3000-seat Riviera Theater in Chicago, the School For New Dance Development in Amsterdam, the Vision Festival in New York, and a defunct record-plating facility in Nashville. His debut solo release Vacuums has garnered widespread international acclaim. Writing in Cadence magazine, Frank Rubolino said, "Weston's drumming is filled with subtleties. He uses a light touch to convey muted sensitivity by deftly massaging the skins and rims. His playing has a stark reality to it, a feeling of nomadic wandering without hope of reaching nirvana. When his playing becomes brusque…the aggressiveness is overt to the point of being disconcertingly intense. Weston puts a unique spin on the drum solo and creates tones of atypical sonority. He is a sound explorer on an apparent endless quest for purity."

His work has also garnered praise from the Wire, Signal To Noise, the Village Voice, Grooves, Bananafish, and the Italian edition of All About Jazz.
