The material stands up just as strong solo (with his rich baritone voice, deft finger-picking acoustic guitar and percussive mouth harp, mostly) as it does with his band The Valentines, live. The energy from song to song is dynamic, the material has satisfying stylistic range, and through it all runs his brass-tacks, poet's pulse, his wry yet romantic vision that colors everything in his unique light.
