Album Notes

I grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado on what was not so much a farm or a ranch, but really an 8-acre petting zoo. We had, and still have dogs and cats by the dozen, peacocks, chickens, geese, ducks, sheep at one point and once, even a wayfaring ring-tailed cat that boarded in our Chevy Beauville van for a few days. My sister and I were raised without religion except for the casual presence of Sathya Sai Baba, an Indian mystic and miracle-worker. My parents subscribed to his pamphlets and we had some photographs of him around the house. Though I dont think my parents ever said as much, I just assumed that these were pictures of God, and felt very indignant when my Mormon friends didnt recognize the dark-skinned, afro-haired portrait of our lord. I eventually became vaguely aware of Jesus Christ and that he had a very close connection to Santa Claus, that they were friends or were at least united in the common cause of granting wishes. So whenever I felt lost or desperately desirous of a Thundercats action figure, I would piously reach out to the holy trinity, Jesus Sai Baba Claus. The desert surrounding Grand Junction is a spiritually charged place. My dad once saw a half-man, half-hawk shapeshifter while jogging along the irrigation canal near our house, an event that inspired the song, Aytd oopa, one of the many unique numbers on Gynocracy. After graduating with a BA in Chinese Language and Literature, I lived in China for a while working as a Chinese-speaking-but-not-actually-Chinese-actress. I returned to the states and almost took a job as a translator for the NSA. After failing two polygraph tests and being made to cry after a severe hazing ritual from a 5-foot-2 polygrapher, I decided to move to Brooklyn and pursue music. Gynocracy is an inspiring collection of songs on themes of power, women and love. I have also founded an organization called The Break Free Project which is devoted to discovering innovative American badasses in small towns through a music tour in a veggie oil-fueled RV. REVIEWS

some misses, but many hits

For such a new artist, many of the tracks on "Gynocracy" are incredibly polished. My favorite is "Boy" with its fantastically lush soundscape. Most of the tracks are similarly fantastic, but a few remind you that Mavi is just starting out (such as "Beast"). That said, I'm definitely looking forward to her next album!

mavi's courage and grace as a musician have launched her into a practically undefined category of writing and playing that she has crafted all her own. you only have to heard it once to feel inspired to create. you must experience this album.

Mavi Graves has written and recorded a stunning debut album that truly lives up to the reviews she's received so far. Gynocracy draws the listener in to its powerful, addictive, poingnant and poetic mix of original electronic music. My favorite examples are: "Diamond", "The Mica Mine", "Star Studded Garment","Do Unto Me" and "My Darling", all of which uniquely illuminate Mavi's multi-layered songwriting talent.

Swept me off my feet.

Surfing about myspace, I came across Mavi Graves page and was struck with the ambient drone of "Do unto me." It confounded me at first, just long enough to listen a little further. Then I moved on... Several days later I found myself humming "Do unto me." I took another listen later that day and this time I stuck around to hear "Tired Eyes," "Boy," and "Diamond." Each one better than the next! I was smitten. I bought "Gynocracy" on CDBaby and I was not disappointed. What strikes me most about Mavi Graves' music is it's intricate layers of sound and the maturity of her existential lyrics. It's truly poetry set to timeless music. Thank you Mavi Graves, where ever you are!
