david maxwell is the greatest living exponent of otis spann and all the earlier "great fathers" (albert ammons, pete johnson, little brother montgomery, jimmy yancey, pinetop smith and so on) of boogie woogie piano and blues. he elevates the piano to be every bit as important as the guitar to the sound of this music and, i dare to say, because his art has evolved through years of dedication, gives us the gift of hearing what those old masters would be playing today were they still with us!

I happened to hear David Maxwell on one of those cable tv jukebox channels while I was doing some work around my apartment and found myself running over to the set so I could find out who it was. So glad I did. Growing up in Chicago, I was, more often than not, exposed to the likes of Junior Wells, AC Reed and Son Seals, and so artists like Maxwell get overlooked. They shouldn't. Give it a spin, you won't be disappointed.
