Album Notes

"Jan Bell is one of the best singer songwriters out there!" Jolie Holland ANTI Recording Artist.
MAGNET MAGAZINE MIX TAPE Interview with Jolie Holland put The Maybelles version of Jan Bell's song 'Right to Love' in her Top 10, Summer 2006.

Village Voice, nyc. (march 2005)
top ten music events and PICK
Nottinghamshire-bred Jan Bell has long set herself above the run of lady folkies with an old timey spareness suggesting a Renaissance faire on the Mississippi delta; her 'I want no country' is one of the saddest, most plainspoken, most skeptical 9-11 songs by anybody.
Now she's got an expert band called the Maybelles behind her, and their dark but catchy tunes on the fine new 'White Trash Jenny' (including a Woddy Guthrie union anthem) never once sink into mere bluegrass reverence.
Chuck Eddy, senior editor.

The Maybelles also made it into the Eddytor's dozen, listed along with best folk and country albums in the music section of the voice as 'jazz tinged Celtic and Appalachian style country folk album'.

In May, we will be featured in the new orleans glossy magazine music issue of City Life this May, and are on their compilation cd.

'the incredible string band immediately springs to mind - off beat roots music mag, new orleans.

'beautiful, soulful record, the best music we received on tour ' jolie holland (anti recording artist)

'Jan Bell is a truth teller, true troubador - heart breaker and heart mender' Sam Parton, the be good tanyas.

The Maybelles met at the ozark folk festival, and are now based in Brooklyn, NY.
Melissa Carper on upright bass, and Jan Bell on guitar and harmonica play originals and old time tunes, but its their high lonesome harmonies that stop traffic.

Influences include Hank, Johnny Cash, The Carter family, Leadbelly, Jimmie Rodgers, Loretta Lynn, Lucinda Williams, and Emmylou.

The Maybelles brand new album ' White Trash Jenny' was made by Mike West at the ninth ward pickin' parlor, and features Mike on banjo, mandolin and banjola. ALSO -
Accompaniment by local new orleans heroes - violinist Neti Vaan (New Orleans Jazz Vipers), Coy Dog - slide guitar, Peter Nu - piano, Slim Nelson - harmonica, and Warren Byrom - trumpet.
