Album Notes

Stepping outside his role as one of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefers to front his own band, The Peter Mayer Group, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Mayer has been steadily building a fervent following across the country. "Musicbox" marks Mayer's 7th solo CD.

A cast of talented musicians appear on "Musicbox"; along with Peter Mayer Group members Jim Mayer, Roger Guth, R. Scott Bryan and Vince Varvel, are celebrated guest recording artists Mac McAnally, Jay Oliver, Chris Walters, Dave Weckl, and Coral Reefer vocalist Tina Gullickson.

Recording under the name PM, Mayer released his debut album for Warner Brothers Records in 1988. Working with Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Hornsby), this album produced the single "Piece of Paradise,"charting at eight on Billboard.

Mayer's "Musicbox" CD brings to life Mayer's 14 new original songs, including Faith in Angels, Last Island, Walking to the Sun, as well as the title track. This collection of tunes showcases Mayer's versatility and virtuosity, weaving finely honed lyrics and memorable melodies with influences from blues, country, folk, jazz, pop and rock into a compelling soundscape that reveals more with each listening.

Professional review:
Peter Mayer's "Musicbox" CD continues to mine the rich vein of great writing and playing that had already earned him the stature of being among the most played artists on Radio Margaritaville. Brilliant songs like The Last Island,Musicbox,Cool Blue Swing and Sweet Nothing, prove to Peter's faithful fans that his growth as an artist goes on and on. I continue to marvel at how great his music is, while those who have yet to see and hear him have no idea (yet) that this body of work even exists. Whether that changes sooner rather than later remains to be seen. What matters right now is that Peter Mayer's "Musicbox" will touch deeply both those who have been waiting patiently for it, and those who for whom it is an introduction to him and his music. Buy it immediately!

Great player, great writer, great singer. So, of course, he doesn't get air-play. Go figure. I'll be buying more of this guy.

Once again Peter Mayer has created a wonderful collection of songs displaying his great musicianship and mastery of many musical styles all woven together with his with his silky vocals. If you like the works of James Taylor, Norah Jones, Paul Simon or Sting, you'll love this album. You'll also enjoy Peter Mayer's "Spare Tire Orchestra" & "Romeo's Garage". How it is that more people haven't discovered this artist remains a mystery to me. Listen and pass him on.
