Like the rich gumbo for which New Orleans is known, Mayes2 mixes their sounds (flutes, clarinets, saxophones, vocals and keyboards) and styles (jazz, classical, originals and New Orleans music) to form a multi- “taste-tual” musical experience.
When we moved to New Orleans in 1985, New Orleans opened her arms wide for us and included us as part of her family. This collection of music reflects our love of music and our love of New Orleans. We like to call it "Nouveaux Grooveaux"- if it grooves, it's always new! Most of these tunes were written by New Orleans/ Louisiana composers: Basile Bares, Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton, Sidney Bechet, Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter, Earl King, A. Schwartz and yours truly, Frank & Cindy Mayes, from 1866 to 2009. The remaining tunes are ones we just really like to listen to & play. "Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler" ("Let The Good Times Roll"!)
So many wonderful people have contributed to our musical lives. We dedicate our first recorded musical effort as Mayes2 to our parents: Charlie & Mary Mayes and Fred & Rebie Sollie, whose constant love, patience and support allowed us to develop our love of music. "They Took the Time."
We also dedicate this CD to our dear friend Stacy Cole, musician, trumpet player, composer, songwriter and beautiful human being whose earthly departure left a space in our lives that no one can fill.
The Musicians of New Orleans: For the extraordinary experiences of performing with, laughing & loving, crying & dying and living in this amazing gumbo of humanity.
Part of the proceeds from the sale of this CD will benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic (www.neworleansmusiciansclinic.org) "Keeping New Orleans Music Alive!"
