BLUES REVUE
The Maynard Brothers CD review by Kenneth Bays, Senior Editor, Blues Revue June, 2001

"These days, it's a miracle when a new band comes along who's interested in writing songs that transcend cliché. Subtlety isn't exactly a hot commodity in today's blues climate, so acts rarely have an incentive to explore the deeper elements of songcraft.

Apparently no one told guitarist Erv Maynard that. On his band's debut, Maynard pens a dozen or so tunes that are smart, nuanced and original. With brother Jeff on vocals and bass, and family friend Harold "Clutch" Reiser on drums, the Maynards come across as a tight, flexible outfit with bar-band-grown-up charm. (And in fact, the members of the group have been performing around their home base of Johnsonville, N.Y., for nearly 30 years.) Despite their facility as musicians and a team - Jeff's bass lines are always fresh, and Reiser holds any groove steady - Erv's songs remain the centerpiece. He could probably work as a writer-for-hire at any respectable blues label.

Originality, of course, doesn't necessarily mean abandoning tradition. The acoustic "Down To The River" repeats a familiar blues tale of murder and demon-haunted guilt, but it's dark melody and guest Tony Perrino's B-3 underpinning raise it a cut above the rest; the song also features Jeff's best vocals. And "Call The Warden" is pure slow blues anguish in 12 bars, with Erv's pained guitar solos telling the death-row story more succinctly than the lyrics themselves do.

But it's when the Maynards move beyond standard blues fare that they truly excel. The uptempo "Don't Call It Love" works on several thematic layers simultaneously and features some of Erv's most involving lyrics; "She Sold My Monkey" is a tongue-in-cheek heavy rock number that in a more daring time would be an FM hit. Elsewhere, Piedmont-leaning blues ("No Devils"), pop balladry ("Do You Remember When") and classic R&B ("You And I Can Fall In Love") expand the Maynard's palette without making them sound like mere dabblers. The disc ends on a misstep, and it's a shame: Erv's folky, acoustic "Better Things To Do" could have been fantastic (sample lyric: "I don't care if you don't love me/ Like fish don't swim in the deep blue sea") if not for a forced gimmick in which the band members trade off vocals. No matter - the Maynard Brothers Band's first release is a keeper, and they're an act to keep an eye on."

Thanks Ken - we agree!

  • Truly Satisfying
    author: Matt Shina

It's hard to find a disc that covers a variety of styles with as much originality and conviction as the MBB does.Fingerpickin',ballad, shuffle or rocker, A very worthwhile addition to anyone's collection. No way will you be disappointed!!!

  • Those Vocals!
    author: Roy

Jeff Maynard is the best natural vocal talent I've ever heard. I listened to these guys on a live radio broadcast in upstate NY, and they played "Don't Walk Away" and some new song called "Ludmilla's Wedding", and man...... I was speechless. This CD is great. But when you can hear a band do a song from the CD live, in a radio studio, and make it sound just as good... well, that's a rare and beautiful thing. These guys did it They are the real stuff. Jeff Maynard SINGS! Erv Maynard writes great songs, and Harold Reiser is a monster on the drums. Where have these boys been? Buy This CD... ... you will thank me. Guaranteed. (And they said they were making another one.. I can't wait!)

  • Inspiration to all who love music, lyrics or just a GREAT band
    author: Linda Chevalier

Back home, we've known all along that these guys were good. But this CD surprised even us. No matter what your thing happens to be... blues, rock, a ballad with lyrics that'll make you think or just great instrumentals with an awsome beat... This CD will hook you all. And let me tell you, once you're hooked on the MBB, you're hooked for life.

  • Pure Emotion
    author: Sherry Wein

There is nothing in the world that compares with this cd. The pure emotion of it is overwhelming. I highly recommend this cd for anyone that wants to hear music the way it should be done. The ones out there making the millions could learn a lot from The Maynard Brothers Band.

  • Unbelievable Sound!
    author: Vicki Rafferty

These guys are amazing! No matter what type of music you like, this sound will knock your socks off! We were hooked as soon as we heard it! We know the owners of a local bar in the Adirondacks so we had them place this CD into the Juke Box for us! The Adirondackers are now Rockin and Rollin with The MBB.

  • Hot and Smooth
    author: Kong

Great, tough sounding CD which comes across as honest in all facets. Tight, crisp rhythms and fantastic guitars which range from sweet and melodic to crunching and butt-kicking. Clever songs loaded with hooks and catches powered by an amazing vocal delivery. This band sounds hungry...watch your cornflakes people!

  • WOW!
    author: New Fan

Oh man, I picked this CD up expecting more of the same but it really kicked me in the head! smart, heartfelt lyrics, amazing guitars, and one of the best rhythm sections I've heard in a long time. If you buy one CD this year, make it this one. Well worth it.

  • I'm Convinced!
    author: A New Fan

This CD lit me up! The acoustic tunes are gorgeous. Call The Warden has such a real vibe, you feel like you're a cell-mate. The rockers smoke. She Sold My Monkey and Redneck Express are what I expect you'd get if you locked Ted Nugent and Billy Gibbons in a dark room with Hannibal Lecter. And when Jeff Maynard sings I Want To Be Your Man.. I would let him! What a set of tonsils on that guy. I'm convinced! These guys are great. My favorite new band!

  • Awesome!
    author: Db

From start to finish, this CD packs a punch! A fun ride of Rock-n-Roll, blues and stellar slow acoustic tunes. There's a tune called Baby, Don't Walk Away that makes you melt. I highly recommend it.
