Album Notes

A versatile performer, composer, and teacher, Mazdak Khamda had his first piano lesson at the age of eleven, and began to pursue music as a career in 1992. Mazdak holds a Bachelors of Music and a Masters of Music in classical Piano. As a composer, Mazdak has published works for solo piano, chamber music, and Electronic Music. In 2003, Mazdak released Two CD's. The first CD entitled Pieces from a Diary, is a collection of eighteen original compositions for solo piano. This CD includes tracks such as Farewell, Cross Roads, and Dissolution which have received enthusiastic reviews by critiques and other musicians. Mazdak's second recording entitled Neglected Masterpieces, is a live recording of classical repertoire for solo piano. This CD includes Preludes and Etudes by Karol Szymanowski.

In January of 2004, Mazdak completed his third CD in collaboration with cellist Betty Wu. This CD entitled Contemplations, includes some of Mazdak's compositions for chamber ensemble, and his suite for solo piano titled Moods. Mazdak has recently joined Sote (who is one of the Bay Area's premiere electronic musicians) and together they have formed a band called Sonic Death Monkies. Their world premiere tracks titled Zell, and Sooz were included on a CD release by Dielectric Records in May of 2004.

REVIEWS

lovely, lovely, LOVELY! Wish I had the music so I could learn to play it.....
author: Karin Givon
This hauntingly lovely piece of music - and I think of it as a piece- all connected, is so lovely that I start the day with it and end the day with it. The one thing I might wish for is the written score, ( is that the right term?) so I could learn to play it myself. This music reminds me of Satie crossed with Chopin. I'm hoping that Maxdak Khamda gets the attention and acclaim he deserves. I could listen for hours.

Sad, Jubilant, and full of emotions
author: Arastoo Darakhshan
Mazdak Khamda's Pieces from a Diary, is an elegant portrayal of love once had. The progression of each track is reminiscent of the transition that one might go through in a relationship. The rise and, in this case, the ultimate fall of love. The music moves from an enlivening mood, to a more subdued piece of reflection. Each track beautifully protrays the intended emotion. Tracks such as "Ceciliana," and "Temescal" exude somber feelings. Feelings that one might experience while sharing affection with another. "Dissolution" and "Regret" are more forceful and rousing pieces. Pieces from a Diary is a beautiful album. Each piece takes the listener through a journey that is sad, curious, and ultimately jubilant. The complexity of each piece draws you into Khamda's world as he uses each note to play your emotions.
