Album Notes

A Classic Christmas is a special collection of music inspired by memories of Christmas' past.

The selections I chose to arrange for this recording represent the music that most readily comes to mind when I think about Christmas.

I found myself drawn to the pieces that had both some classical elements and some emotional content that related to my own feelings about Christmas.

Although not exactly a Christmas carol, I just had to include Linus and Lucy, from "A Charlie Brown Christmas", since nothing better captures the childhood exuberance of Christmas than the scene of the Peanuts gang dancing around the piano in the middle of rehearsing their Christmas play.

For the most part, I have tried to make the arrangements peaceful and elegant, never opting for complexity when simplicity seemed to convey the proper mood.

I hope you will enjoy these pieces as a part of your Christmas celebration for many years to come.

While buying Night Wheel from Michael Barry and Friends, I was checking out other releases from Laughing Buddha and, since it is December, had to play a song or two from A Classic Christmas. WOW! Another home run from Michael Barry and Friends. This music is beautiful. I was going to say that the arrangements perfectly capture the spirit of Christmas but realized that what happens is that the music invokes and releases that precious spirit. Which, especially in these troubled times, is a really good thing. Salud Michael Barry and Friends!

Since Mike Barry released his Christmas CD in 2000, it has become my default choice when I need to buy a Christmas present that is useful, tasteful and under $20. 

It's a great gift because it's a great CD.  A good selection of pieces -- old and new, serious and playful -- an interesting variety of instrumention, sophisticated arrangements, superb musicianship.  In short, it's good music.
