Album Notes

As a student at the University of Virginia in the late '80s and early '90s, Melissa McClain sang and played guitar as a member of a band, The Taming of Rex, and an acoustic duo, Talhelm and Thompson.

After graduating and moving to Michigan, her job as a high school English teacher forced music into the background.

However, after missing performing for all those years, she's planned a comeback.

A busy summer and fall of working with producer/singer-songwriter Michael King has brought about Melissa's debut CD entitled "Soaring." The collection is a mixture of lighthearted, up-beat tunes and more thoughtful, literature-inspired narratives.

Her songs let the listener in--to the struggle for freedom, to the thawing of the heart when one falls in love, to self-criticism and searching.

Accompanied by strong, soaring melodies, these songs showcase the poetics of lyricism.

Currently, Melissa is playing around the Ann Arbor, Michigan area that she calls home.

This CD is in my CD player constantly, the lyrics are very well written, and the way it all comes together is amazing. The best music for driving around, and calming you down after a stressful day.

Compelling lyrics explore and describe humanity's inner life.
author: Kirsten Root Nahas
Like Shawn Colvin before her, Melissa McClain has grown from an accomplished cover artist to a master songwriter; the resulting debut album, "Soaring," explores life's pain and possibilities. Strong individuals, especially women, figure prominently in her musical stories. Her lyrics explore questions of religion, love, prejudice, freedom and self-doubt. The melodies include delicate, tranquil arrangements as well as get-up-and-dance, sing-in-the-shower rhythms.
