McKinley : Big Top Shop Talk

Acoustic pop with the serious groove of Matt Chamberlain's drums, the curious texture of David Torn's guitars, and McKinley's spooky conversational voice. More break-up than make-out music, although it has been done.

Album Notes

McKinley grew up in Anchorage, Alaska where she spent a lot of time pretending she was a cowboy or a secret agent. She then went to a girl's Catholic high school in California where she learned "Hail Mary" in Spanish and how to gracefully scale a chain link fence without snagging her pleated skirt.

She has lived in London, Israel, and now Portland, OR.

great, intriging album from sensually singer
author: rené
This is a great, intriging album from a sensually singer, comparable with the fascinating works of Wes Martin and Andy Rhinehart. Matt Chamberlain's swampy drums dictate the low rhythms, Fima Ephron's basses add a deep, warm sound, Adam Widoff's guitars create effective licks, while David Torn is all over the place, although in a very subtle way. Of course the main actress here is McKinley, who sings everything in a quite, personal way, which makes even When Doves Cry her own song. Hard to pick up a highlight, although my personal fav is Miss Me, with a sensitive guitarsolo of Torn.
