On my first day in the world someone other than my mother gave birth to me and left me nameless for 3 months. I am still recovering. My early years were spent living on the edge, eating plants and sealing my lips with super glue. I was raised by the piano and kept sheltered from the world. I saw my first episode of Gilligan's Island last year. I didn't get it. I began writing my first song at the age of 4. I finished it yesterday. I started playing my first instrument early, performing only for myself. Eventually I was able to get my hands on others. My school years were a drag. So was my history teacher. I have wasted time more than once. Religion found me hungry and alone and I ate every lie it fed me. I don't eat Chinese food. I've worshipped false gods. The truth rescued me and destroyed me. I don't meditate. In my previous life I was the president of a very distinguished organization and I had a name. Politics make me breakout. I have lived in 4 states. None of them were mental. All of them were temporary. Sometimes I go to bed with my guitar. Sometimes I don't. I spent more money on my bicycle than my car. Janet Jackson once sang to me. My CD collection is the smallest thing I own. Well almost. I have nightmares about the future of music. I write all my own songs (with a little help from my friends) and I don't like sharing them. I do anyway. I prefer to play with myself but I do have a band. Sometimes my temper gets the best of me. I killed Superman. My music is what 'they' call groove-oriented rock. The CD is what I call Crown Yourself King. I have.

Crown Yourself King is a damned impressive record, an all-encompassing mishmash
author: Jeff Ignatius - River Cities Reader
Crown Yourself King is a damned impressive record, an all-encompassing mishmash of alt-rock styles that’s remarkably polished, confident, and effective. This is more of a rock record than pop, though, and it sounds for all the world like an album with some major-label muscle behind it. It’s clear that Clay’s in love with the electric guitar, and when he uses it, he’s pretty much unstoppable. In its power-pop highlights, Crown Yourself King makes it sound as if Clay could indeed (to borrow from one of his song titles) kill Superman.

...some of the hookiest and most memorable tunes
author: Bernard M. Resnick, Esq
Matthew’s new CD, "Crown Yourself King", contains some of the hookiest and most memorable tunes we’ve heard in a long time. His style ranges from infectious pop/alt. rock ("Rainbow Tree", "What A Beautiful Day To Die") to 60’s pop ("Paisley Point of View") to dramatic ballads ("The One Who Hates Me", "Saturnine"); lyrics are smart and ironic ("I Killed Superman"), and the production is imaginative.
