Album Notes

JOHN MCMANUS is a Philadelphia-area singer-songwriter who independently produced and released his solo debut, SIDE ONE, in February 2004. The CD features five of John's original songs. The CD was produced by JOHN MCMANUS, recorded and mixed by Steven LaFashia at Resonant Recording and mastered by Peter Humphreys at Masterwork Recording.

The spark that ignited John's interest in music was when---at age 13---he witnessed the video for Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" while leaving the house for a school function. He started molding his unique musical vision after graduating from Penn State in December 2001. He began performing as a solo artist at area open mics. Growing confident, he formed the band JUMPSHIP in September 2002. The band began arranging for John's songs and played open mic nights in the area. From September 2002 to June 2003, John consistently entertained crowds as the band's singer and rhythm guitarist.

John's artistic journey has come full circle and he is currently performing as a solo artist in the Greater Philadelphia area. He has been booked in two states and his music can be requested on WSTW 93.7 FM and WXPN 88.5 FM.

He has lent his time and talents to benefit worthy causes, such as Delaware Hospice. On January 8, 2005, John did a Tsunami Benefit Show at the Bellefonte Café in Wilmington.

John's diverse musical influences include the Beatles, R.E.M., The Smiths, Nirvana, Ryan Adams, Jesse Malin, The Clash, The Posies and Caroline's Spine. Despite these influences, JOHN MCMANUS creates passionate, original and honest music. He performs three to four times a week and appreciates all of the support he is given. John works very hard on his writing and performing craft and is focused on fulfilling his artistic dreams. He is an independent artist and maintains his website http://www.john-mcmanus.com

"...Side One consists of five mid-tempo acoustic rock numbers about all the right subjects: love, girls, life and you know, stuff. John McManus's saving grace, in the world of local singer-songwriters, is that he seems to sing naturally, and doesn't sound like he's had some vocal coach teaching him to sing "properly." Nothing new to be found here, but still an enjoyable listen, and from what I hear, a hard-working performer. Probably a hit with the college crowd."

QUOTES:
"Recording John's Side One was a great experience. He was all-business in the studio, quickly laying down quality performances with a keen sense of what he wanted sonically." - Steve LaFashia (Producer/Engineer, Guitarist/Keyboardist of Jealousy Curve)

The CD, SIDE ONE, by John McManus captures the mind and spirit of John McManus-manifested into music. No other CD in existence displays, the passion and love for music than John McManus, SIDE ONE. Buy it and listen to it, you'll become increasingly more aware of the effort put forth and you will increasingly enjoy it with every listen. The songs are infectious and will stay with you. I find myself humming lines from "Anthems From My Bedside," "To Your Own Surprise," and "Platforms of Our Lives," during the course of my day and am happy that they pop into my head. I, also, must mention the lyrics-listen to them!! You'll make more and more connections and understand every song deeper with every listen and find a deep meaning to link to your own life. THE BOTTOM LINE: A MUST BUY!!

Well... John sent me this CD when a lot of things were going on in my life, and one song that I really held onto was "To Your Own Surprise". I listened to it and it literally brought me to tears. His lyrics are real and anyone that listens to them can relate, his vocals aren't fixed up, it's very natural and that adds a certain vibe to the CD that I have never experienced before. Listening to the CD makes you feel as if you're sitting in the room and John is playing right before you; you're a part of it. To sum it up... great lyrics, music, and vocals... a complete package... the soundtrack of anyone's life. CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE JOHN!

Strong debut, a little rough around the edges but definitly worthwhile

Well, I am paid to give unbiased coverage of things I care about and I must say John is a dear friend, but that does not enter into the equation. When I first got the CD I put it in my stereo and gave it a quick listen. It was good enough that I didn't take it out. I then turned my attention to it and listened to it greatly. Overall the EP is very strong, but there are some things that John should work on. I think Anthems from My Bedside and Platform of Our Lives are both great tracks. In fact I catch myself singing the first one at work. However, I think the pacing of the EP could use some work. Instead of Innocence is Far Away going third, My Serendipity should. I am not a huge fan of Innocence is Far Away either. It has been growing on me some. I really do enjoy To Your Own Surprise. It is a very solid track, not as strong as tracks 1,2, and 4. Overall, this is a good EP and John's songwriting is pretty polished, it could still use some work, but it is good. I know he has a song about Sept. 11 that I would've put on instead of Innocence but that is it. I have let friends listen to it and I sing along with it in my car. I don't do that with just anything. For the price and the quality of the music definitly buy this and let your friends listen.
