Album Notes

Combining two of Australia’s most inventive young artists NIGHTLIGHT is the debut EP of the collaboration between vocalist Megan Washington and pianist Sean Foran.
This new recording sits solidly in a beautiful place between jazz, folk and contemporary pop music, transcending categorization with its defining characteristic being the sublime vocals and inventive writing and arrangements.

It’s very easy to assume that Megan Washington is several things that she’s not. Older, for one. At the tender age of twenty years she has certainly made a splash in the Australian jazz music scene. Already performing at Woodford Folk Festival, Ambiwerra, Bennett’s Lane, Valley Jazz festival, James Morrison award winner and many others, Megan was also a finalist in the national jazz awards at the Wangaratta Jazz festival in 2005.
She has a unique ability to sing anything with style and grace, energy and emotion. Not just a jazz singer but a real singer.

"Megan has that indefinable quality that lets you know she’s a real jazz singer. It’s not just that she swings, it’s the way she takes a song and makes it her own that really sets her apart." - James Morrison

Sean Foran is known primarily for his work with original jazz trio ‘Misinterprotato’. Performing around Australia and at festivals in Canada and Japan his individual innovative style at the piano and compositions has led to widespread critical and audience acclaim.
He has released two albums with the trio, the acclaimed debut “now for the free” and the strong follow-up “in is in”. Both records truly take the piano trio into new territory with inventive writing and arrangements.
With shows ranging from Wangaratta Jazz Festival, World Expo Japan, Kutchan Jazz Festival Japan, Calgary Jazz Festival Canada, Woodford Folk Festival, Melbourne Jazz festival and many others, Foran is a unique voice in contemporary music

Megan and Sean began working together in 2005 and are currently based in Brisbane. After finding a common approach to making music, Nightlight was recorded in early 2006.
Featuring 7 tracks that range from a sublime interpretation of the Radiohead classic “No surprises”, the jazz standard “some other time” and a wonderful re-imagining of the Harry Nilsson hit “Everybody’s talking”. Rounding off the disc are two original works including “FIN”, a beautiful collaboration with music by Foran and lyrics by Washington.

NIGHTLIGHT REVIEW - TIMEOFF
Highly respected in the Australian jazz scene, Megan Washington and Sean Foran (of Misinterprotato fame) have combined their exceptional talents to create this stunningly evocative record. Taking possession of Fred Neill’s ‘Everybody’s Talkin’’ and Bill Evans’ ‘Some Other Time’ and making them their own, they add sparkle and delicateness, while ‘Fin’ and ‘Nightlight’ showcase the breathtaking beauty of Washington’s voice and Foran’s mastery of the piano. ‘Water and Time’ (with music written by local saxophonist Raphael Karlen) is pure single malt - a true lesson in how to create sexy ambience, but the real gem is their cover of Radiohead’s ‘No Surprises’. It will haunt you, and linger in your head for weeks, hitting a mark even the original didn’t.
