Album Notes

On a snowy winter night, stuck at home with the flu, Meg Braun recorded her first original tune – into her home answering machine – and a singer-songwriter was born.

Not so many years later, the philosophy major from Toledo, Ohio, found a home hosting the open mic at the legendary C-Note in the creative cauldron of NYC’s East Village. Charged up by the gritty energy of the city, with periodic escapes to peaceful SummerSongs retreats, Meg composed the songs for her debut CD, Tomboy Princess.

“My inspirations come from a lot of different places,” Meg says. “On this CD there is a lot that came from my childhood and teen years - what is personal can be universal - but a lot of my writing philosophy comes from the idea that you don't have to use facts to tell the truth.”

In this way, Tomboy Princess is rich in truth. In songs both sweetly melodious (“Once Upon a Time”) and solemn (“No More Happily Ever After”) Meg uses the language of fables and folk tales to illuminate the modern world. Even a song taken from the headlines, “Runaway Bride,” assumes the bright halo of a fairy tale, while a straightforward coming-of-age story like “New Orleans” becomes a vision of wider worlds, both real and imaginary.

The strength of songs such as these inspired a bushel of folk-music royalty to contribute their talents to the project: Greg Greenway, Kevin So, Tom Prasada-Rao, Penny Nichols, bassist Freebo, slide guitarist Pat Wictor, percussionist Cheryl Prashker, and all three members of Red Molly. Tomboy Princess was mixed, mastered and partially recorded by Mark Dann.

“Meg's new CD is beautifully produced and really shows off her tough and sweet voice. Much funkier than your usual singer-songwriter effort, great stories and not a bit generic.”
– Kenny Edwards, Stone Poneys

Meg Braun -Remember that Name

(A Small Disclaimer Meg is a Friend ) There are times you can get a idea of what you are about to hear on a unopened CD just from the supporting players. Newcomer Meg Braun 1st Full Length collections of songs ‘TOMBOY PRINCESS” has a list of bold names from the Folk, Acoustic, Singer Songwriter Scene that you probably get away calling it a All Star Cast. Cheryl Prasher, Feebo, Pat Wictor, Keven So, All of Red Molly Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner and Carolann Solebello. Neither they nor she disappoint. The 12 song collection runs the gamut of emotions. It’s Title cut “TOMBOY PRINCESS” puts perfectly to lyrics and cords a common family theme of a little girl and her parents who’s future projected paths do not necessary run parallel. But throughout there is hope that by songs end they will find a way for each to co exist they do of course. NEW ORLEANS has a super hook in it’s opening line of “She went to Sleep on a Chicago Sunday and Woke Up on a Louisiana Monday in a car of a man she just met” Gets you thinking right then “What is going to happen?” “When it’s Over” is pure pain and sadness “When it’s Over you know because you won’t’ care if it’s Him on the Phone” “When it Over You Know cause You’ll feel better being Alone” The pace of all the songs are Gentle and Easy but don’t be Fooled there Message may not Hit you on the Head with loud Electric Guitars and Drumbeats but you will get the message I assure you that .If your looking for a well written well produced (by Meg herself) CD Don’t hesitate purchase this CD then purchase a few for friends they will Love you for it.

If you're a fan of songs that tell a great story, you'll love this record. Meg Braun's songs are personal and heartfelt, but always retain a sense of optimism and hope. New Orleans, Tomboy Princess and When It's Over are standouts in a record that is strong all around.

Tomboy Princess - GREAT!

I love this album! Tomboy Princess (the song) brings me to tears every time I hear it, and there are so many aspects to each song to listen to, from Meg's clear voice to the instruments to the arrangements . . . each has a unique feel to them but they tie together cohesively and beautifully. I love hearing a little of Meg's sense of humor as well as a touch of cynicism, too. Excellent album!
