Mekiel's explosive saxophone style has been compared to the likes of Groover Washington Jr., Stanley Turrentine and John Klemmer. This Chicago born native, began studying music and woodwinds at the age of 15 in Chicago, under Louis Gray, high school band director (Crane HS). After several years with Gray, he moved to the Caribbean (St.Croix, U.S.Virgin Islands) where he continued to pursue his musical career. Hamilton taught him the "Art of Reservation", and how to enhance his playing style. He also studied jazz in St.Croix with Benny Jacob El (a graduate of Juilliard School of Music). After years of living, playing and touring with several theatrical / dance companies in the U.S.Virgin Islands, Mekiel returned to the United States and now resides in Los Angeles.
Keeping his eyes on the prize to become a recording artist he continued his music studies with legendary saxophonist Bill Greene (improvisation lessens). He also studied music and marketing at Los Angeles city college and West Los Angeles city college. With over a hundred compositions under his belt Mekiel started his own label, MekMuse Records.
