notes

Folky-blues, acoustic jazz, Philadelphia based Melody Gardot gently stirs the senses with a diverse collection of beautifully poignant songs dripping with strength-filled honesty.

The Bedroom Sessions EP was recorded bedside following a motor vehicle accident that left young Gardot immobile and disabled. It was during this time the "Some Lessons" EP was written. Dubbed the 'bedroom sessions' due to the nature of the recording process, this debut EP showcases a soul-bearing artist, with songs full of profound maturity and empathy.

Some press:

"I live for today; I'll worry about the future when it gets here." That is the practical, yet stoic outlook of a 21-year-old singer-songwriter who nearly lost her life at age 19 when she was hit by an illegally turning jeep while riding her bicycle through Philadelphia. This tenacious young woman has risen through therapy and pain to perform again on regional stages.

Her EP "Some Lessons - The Bedroom Sessions" is in part a chronicle of her struggle to maintain her identity against the backdrop of disability. She has not exploited these circumstances, nor hidden them. It is all rather matter- of-fact. Yet even without the drama of her recovery, she would still have had plenty of interest from media and audiences, for she is truly a dynamic and sincere talent."

Melody Gardot has a wonderful voice and a wonderful sound. It makes me feel so good when listening to her.

Découverte par l'album "Worrisome Heart", l'intimité de celui-ci est encore plus délectable.

  • What a voice!
    author: Drew VanKrevelen

Melody Gardot's "Some Lessons" gets four stars from me but maybe should get five. It's an incredible little album but her "Worrisome Heart" is even better. If you're a fan of golden-throated jazz singers, do your self a favor and get them both!

  • Extraordinary
    author: D.D.

Honest, real, soulful. Melody has a moving, sultry voice. Great new talent. Will speak to the heart of anyone who has suffered deeply. Makes the listener want to hear more! Would recommend.

  • Just Plain Awesome
    author: Bryan Koroleski

This CD is just plain awesome. Melody is a great artist and I just can't get enough of her music. I've been listening to her ever since iTunes put Worrisome Heart out as a single of the week. I'm not usually a blues or jazz listener, but I can always make an exception for Melody.

  • Beautiful
    author: Julie Orth

This girl can sing the crap out of anything. Even if you don't think you are into blues or jazz, her voice is so soothing and addictive, you can listen to anything as long as she's singing it.

  • Love Love LOVE!
    author: Coree Metzger

I knew from the moment I heard the Worrisome Heart single that I wanted to hear more from Melody Gardot. The amazing back story to this album makes her an inspiring individual, but doesn't necessarily guarantee musical talent. Rest assured that her music stands on it's own two feet - and it is brilliant. This album makes my heart ache in the most delicious way! Beautiful, poignant lyrics and the most soothing melodies make this my absolute current favorite.

  • B-B-Brilliant
    author: Craig Davis

This girl is the real deal. A throwback to Peggy Lee, as up-to-date as Norah Jones. This EP has some of the same tracks as Gardot's CD, but they're worth having for the different feel, to know better where she was in her recovery. The only thing better would be if her tour comes near my state.

  • Amazing!
    author: Chris Whitehouse

I found Melody by happy accident. The music on here and on 'Worriesome Heart' can only be described as beautiful! Astonshing for someone so youg to by making music this good and at the same time mature and honest! She's amazing live-I strongly recommend you get to see her if you can-you won't be disppointed!!! But don't let all these glowing reviews make up your mind-let the music do it. Buy this C.D.!!!!!

  • Agonizingly good
    author: Tim Kornegay

Recorded during the recovery period after her accident, the personal anguish seems more pervasive in her vocals on The Bedroom Sessions. You'll find yourself hurting for her on this one. More so than on Worrisome Heart...her subsequent, jazzier, cooler release. In the latter, the agony is still there, but more subdued...like she's made peace with the accident or accepted its results. Less so on The Bedroom Sessions.

I first heard "Worrisome Heart" and loved the CD so much I went hunting for others - which brought me to CD Baby. I am so pleased to have been able to more Melody Gardot. A beautiful voice, wonderful songs.

Fantastic. Fantastic. Fantastic. What more can one say.

  • Had me stunned!
    author: Detlev Rybotycky

What Melody has to say in her songs and how she expresses her feelings are simly awesome. Wish there were loads and loads more artists showing such an honesty and heart-felt deep emotions.

  • Both Albums...
    author: Jennifer Boyd

I listen to her songs when I'm driving, on my iPod when I workout; she has such a soothing voice, and sings with such feeling. Such soul...I recommend both her albums :)

  • A giant talent
    author: Wheels

Melody Gardot has already produced two stunning albums (this, plus her subsequent big label debut with Verve, Worrisome Heart). Forget about her story, forget that this is her debut album. Just listen. She knows how to write intelligent, honest lyrics. She knows how to write beautiful, compelling melodies. She knows how to play piano and guitar (self-taught on the guitar!). And man o' man, she's got beautiful pipes. But mostly, she just puts it all together in a soulful, swinging, honest package. Melody Gardot is the real deal. Il n’y a que de belles choses à venir de cette Modern Day Dame.

Fantastic, accomplished and intimate album. We have played it to death since receiving it and bought her second album.

  • Purrrfect
    author: Steve Backhouse

Like others I was late on the scene - it took an email from the Record Company to turn me on. Now, having seen/heard Melody at the Glee Club in Birmingham (UK), I'm hooked! I saw this EP/album on myspace and it was a gimme gimme. It's soothing, captivating and makes me feel like I've been listening to Melody for years - shame it didn't have the excellent version of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' on it! I guess that track has special personal meaning to Melody but I'll be contacting her to see if we can get a copy at some point in the future. Now back to the purring...............

  • superb songcraft

One minute smoky, the next plaintive, Gardot has a voice that will move past your ears, wrap around your cortex and affect all your senses at once, making places and settings visible through the fall of notes.

    author: Rachel Bellenoit

I'm a little late on the uptake here, but I have been visiting her website a few times a year for the past few years. Melody Gardot is an exceptional singer. Her new CD is phenomenal. I'm glad to see she's touring Europe. She's got an incredibly mature voice for someone so young. This young lady's star is going to rise and shine very quickly, and rightly so!

  • Courageous beauty
    author: Desiree

This is a remarkable set of songs from a remarkable young woman. How inspiring that someone can lift herself up from such difficult and unfair circumstances to make such beautiful music. I was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and Melody has definitely inspired me to rise above the pain. Her songs and arrangements are so simple, yet that is what makes them extremely powerful. Beautiful music.

  • Amazing and never coming out of my cd player
    author: Michele Yarding

I got this CD and just love it. Ive had it in my car for two weeks and my kids (5 and 8) now know all the words and sing along. Its so cute! They make me put it on when we read at night to go to bed! I love this music and the fact that Melody is such an inspiration is such an amazing thing. She deserves to be heard and I cant tell you how impressive her music is, even without the disability factored in. That just makes for a double whammy of incredible talent.

  • the cd was perfect. i really enjoyed it, very good.
    author: damian ruby

the cd was very good, good songs and music, very enjoyable.

  • author: Kurt Cybulski

A brain injury at 39 left me unable to draw; move and think as well as I used to. Melody Gardot has risen so far above her own disability that I'm inspired to be as good as I can still be. I'm happy to be alive and I hear loud and clear that so is Melody. Simply Beautiful Music, disability or not a rare talent.

  • Fandoubleappletastic!!!
    author: Brian D Blessing

Some Lessons is one of the most peaceful and fantastic collections of songs I have ever listened to. It has gotten me through 18 months of being out to sea. I recently lost my first copy so I bought a second... and a third to send to ym sister for her birthday! Wicked Ride is amazing and Cry Wolf is astounding... Mama makes me want to hug MY mother... Thanks Melody!

  • author: heidy

very relaxing and addicting music....I love it!

  • An amazing songstress
    author: Christine

7 songs of pure amazement. So emotive so pure and so refreshing. I found her on IAC radio here and fell in love with her voice. She reminded me of Norah Jones, only better!!!! After a day of listening to her over and over again online I had to break down and buy a CD. Her voice in some lessons makes me cry. That has NEVER happened to me before! Such a powerful lyricist and songwriter. Wise way beyond her years.

  • Xanadu
    author: Montie Bredin

Well done. The music is heart felt and full of soul. Looking forward to the next CD.

  • amazing.....
    author: Quincy

I love Norah Jones; but, Melody's album is so much more arresting...so passionate and personal. It's rare that, when you are fishing around for local independent artists, that you happen upon a masterpiece. To do this type of work at 20/21 is unbelievable...to do this type of work at 41 would be equally impressive. She has a rare gift that blesses you differently with each play. Obviously, I think this album is a "must buy."

  • Do not pass her up
    author: Jason Sizemore

Melody Gardot is a gift, a crystal clear voice packed with emotion, mystery, and inspiration. Her songs and messages are delivered effortlessly, enchanting audiences. If you buy one CD this year, make it hers.

  • Such an amazing record
    author: Robin Andrews

I saw Melody at The World Cafe Live for a Lunch Show recently and bought a copy of her cd there.....Then came back to buy another (well make my husband!) We're both in love with her voice and this CD. Its amazing how she recorded it and how she made such an awful experience turn into something magical. Inspiring and commendable beyond all words. And the music's just as good as her story!!!!!!!!

  • MY FAVORITE CD!
    author: Gwen

I've always loved blues, and this cd has quickly become my favorite. Melody has given us a beautiful collection of songs from the heart. Finding "Goodnite" (which doesn't appear on the label)at the end of the cd was a wonderful surprise! I LOVE that song!

  • Incredible there is no one like her
    author: Michele Peters

I saw her live at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia and was just blown away. I cried, and laughed and will never be able to stop listening to her. Its once in a lifetime you meet an artist thats as special as Melody Gardot. I came here to order a CD for all of my girlfriends.

  • AMAZING
    author: Barbara Boadu

i absolutely loved it. the words pierced right through my very soul. deeply moving and what a pure strong voice. it is true, some lessons we learn the hard way.

  • Passionate and Introspective; great lyrics, great voice.
    author: Todd

I saw Melody perform in Sellersville as an opening act for Livingston Taylor. She was absolutely awesome. Passionate and Introspective, powerful lyrics and great voice - you can easily empathize with Melody as you begin to understand her courageous battle back from despair. I would love to see her again and look forward to more music.

  • An absolute breathe of fresh air
    author: Joe Tate

This whole CD is filled with passion and lyrics from the soul. It is a joy to listen to over and over again. The only bad thing about it is that it is to short. I look forward to more from her and seeing her live. Thank you Melody for a beautiful CD.

  • A Present
    author: Tiffany Hamberg

My dad got me this cd for my birthday I was like Melody WHO? and then I put it on. I was blown away. THEN I found out about how she is disabled and she made this cd in her bedroom while she couldnt even walk! I mean talk about inspiring! I will never again complain about a headache or anything like that.....this girl is a hero.

    author: Marissa

I love this.......It has obtained a permanent spot in my cd player. Everything about this CD is beautiful. Hauntingly beautiful.

  • pure bliss
    author: D

this song is 7 tracks of bliss. the melodies and lyrics are perfectly executed and remarkably poetic. her voice is powerful and these songs show off her skill and elegance. a wonderful cd.

  • Down to earth, catchy, and spiritual. A great album for when you're feeling up
    author: Jim Mitchell

I finally picked up Melody Gardot's Some Lessons after enjoying her music on Myspace. I was a little leery of the purchase because while what I had heard was great, there were a few tracks I hadn't heard, and shelling out the cash of a full length for a six song EP was something I wasn't sure I could handle. Finally against my better judgment I bought the EP, and was I ever glad I did. Melody brings a tremendous amount of talent in a small package from her entrancing guitar riffs to the smooth rolls on the piano. They both come together with her wonderfully clear voice and make it an EP worth almost anyone's time. Knowing what Melody went trough in life to put out such a great piece of work made Some Lessons a spiritually healing experience for me. My only complaint about this EP was it left me wanting, and needing, so much more.

  • Moving...Beyond Words
    author: Kristen Lavigne

Melody Gardot unique, wonderful, and moving. I loved the CD. I look forward to the albums to come.

  • A Pleasure!
    author: Brian D Blessing

This cd is fantastic, jazzy with great melodies. A lot of good advice is implied in these songs. A joy to listen too!

  • Wonderful!!!
    author: Donna

Wonderful CD. 1st heard Melody on WXPN. My 5yr old says that she sings pretty (that's an understatement as she has the most beautiful and haunting voice). Even my husband commented on her voice and the CD. just great and an inspiration to all.

  • gives me chills!!!!!!!
    author: michelle shrinten

this cd.......omg.....what a killer vocalist and writer. her words are so true and pure and her song wicked ride has become my newest life-soundtrack. perfect for long car rides too! I use it on my commute every day to work!

  • soooooooooo good
    author: timmy g.

I got this album for my wife to give to her for xmas. But, I had to come back and order another because this one is mine. This girl is flat out talented, but an inspiration too.

  • stunning pieces of a dream
    author: Nancy--PCPA

An Ep that I wish was an album. This is an amazing example of the human spirit. The struggle is there in her voice...it cries. My husband heard this and dropped his fork on his plate. He was stunned. This music touches one's soul. Powerful, dream-like imagery and a voice that could melt the ice caps. 5 stars

  • The beauty of life lies within things like this...
    author: Holly

Melody is amazing. Her talent is so obvious as each song on this CD holds you and cradles you against the risks and chances taken through everyday life. It's uplifting, as this is when music takes a step to the next level, more so than the feel of when stories are told. It is shared advice and personal experiences gained through ravenous teachings, written, sung, recorded, and here for anyone who needs some faith. Melody is so young and bright with spirit, as all of it is truely felt within this recording. I must thank her for such a beautiful thing and do encourage anyone who's interested to give in and own a copy of this CD for themselves.

  • Great vocalist
    author: Crystal

Melody Gardot has a very haunting voice. I have listened to this collection over and over again. As a singer I greatly appreciate her music.

  • Music that speaks to the soul
    author: Eilleen

This CD speaks to the soul. Each song has it's own story that Ms. Gardot relates through her lyrics and, more importantly, through the "voice" behind the voice. Thank you! What a treat.

  • A true Gem
    author: Michael Yellers

I found Melody through WXPN, the radio station here in Philadelphia. When her voice came on I had to pull my car over and listen to the whole song till its end. I never do that. She has something magical. Its an honesty and a purity in her voice like nothing I have ever heard before.

  • Inspirational
    author: Thertius

This CD has the same effect Miles Davies' 'Kind of Blue' does on me. Whenever I'm in the mood for feelings I put it on and listen to it as much as it takes. You can sense every single feeling gathered through this album. It's as you where in a sea of sensibility and every wave can get to you and you get it straight in your heart. A most accomplished album and an astounding display of talent. Thanks for your heart Melody.

  • The thrill is there
    author: Gunnar

I'd like to say, that in my ears, this cd is one of the best albums out this year, and i've listened to a few... Soul!

  • She her live!
    author: Kim

I read about Melody Gardot in our local newspaper and was looking forward to hearing her at the WXPN All About the Music Festival. At the Festival, she, and her band, were incredible! I'm really enjoying the cd but am glad that my first introduction to her was a live performance.

  • an amazing artist beautiful linside and out
    author: Barbara

Melody Gardot. Just the name rings of beauty. Her Cd is one of the finest albums I have ever purchased. With a voice that even my youngest child (shes 5) loves to fall asleep to. I put it on for her everynight and the minute I dont she starts asking for it! She loves goodnite. Melody has put so much soul and emotion into this CD. I cry everytime I hear some Lessons. Its juts such a beautiful song and a beautiful story of overcomoing great tragedy and disability.

  • wonderful!!!!!

    I forgot the stars!!!!!!!!!!!

  • author: Christine Yantos

My husband ordered this Cd for my birthday. It was the best present I got by far. I hear Ricki Lee Jones, Janis Joplin, and Billie Holiday in this young starletts voice. Shes amazing. Im coming back to life just listening to her voice. I do hope that people catch on soon. The music industry is so oversaturated with junk and its rare you see an artist like this actually exist. Shes onto something. Something huge. And My heart goes out to her for her courage and her strength in the face of her disability. What an inspiration. She makes all my problems seem like nothing at all and she gives me strength by knowing she does try so hard to push past her difficulties and sing from her heart. An amazing person, musician and young woman.

  • Wonderful music
    author: Stacey

Loved every note. Amazing voice and music. Love how you can feel what she is feeling when she sings her songs. On the song "Some Lessons" it makes you feel her pain. Great cd. Love it.

  • The one CD in a sea of zillions
author: Robb Howell - Peace Machine

These tunes kicked by butt - Janis Ian meets India Arie & Bonnie Raitt - but citing those artists is only a point of written referrence; Melody has her own voice, her own style & her own vibe. In a plethora of other singers (most especially with the advent of the internet and indy music) to find something like this is commensurate with finding a million dollar diamond in Virginia City. Both my wife (an established artist in her own right) and myself were totally floored by these tunes, and especially THAT VOICE. Man, I hope the severely polluted music industry that exists these days and is force feeding us absolute crap makes wide a path for Melody to get to where she belongs. All due respect - she doesn't belong here. She belongs out there. Best regards, Robb & Pilar Howell

  • Persistence
    author: Matthew

I first heard Melody in a doctors office because she came past me singing softly. I asked her about what had happened to her and felt bad she had so much harship for such a young woman. She is a beautiful woman, despite her disability. Attractive mostly becuase of her goodness and kindness she shows everyone including me. I am partially paralyzed and her music gives me hope. Her song some lessons is so true. Not only a woman capable of moving people with her voice, she moves you with her soul. She is the kindest person I have ever met. And Im glad God smiles on her to give her the talent despite her afflictions. I have only listened online to the cd because I cannot afford to buy it. But if I were in a different position, I would support her in the blink of an eye.

  • Inspiring
    author: Tammy Ponsfield

I am in awe of Melody. I met her and did not know she could sing. She was in so much pain, was close to tears and I easily saw how she struggled. I admire her courage and her strength. No one has ever shown so much determination to overcome such circumstances. People like Melody are rare and few, and like those before her, she gives not only people who are disabled hope, but people who are not and take life for granted. I know that God will give her the strength she needs to heal. I just hope he grants her the courage to keep on trying to push past it. This woman is a rare gem.

  • WOW
    author: Nancy Falkow

I saw her live........and now its like I can keep jer in my pocket. Shes just as amazing a singer as she is a person. And to write like this for such a young woman! If you dont get this CD you will kick yourself forever.

  • Can't wait to hear it live
    author: PhillyQueenie

A voice like I've never heard before. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer! The cd got stuck in my car player and I didn't even mind...soulfull and melodic...her first name really fits. Thanks for this cd. Can't wait for more.

  • fantastic

I live in LA and there are tons and tons of musicians there...nothing like this though. Its from a time when music was moving. I wish I could see her in person...when you coming to LA Melody?????? please come! JP

  • Soothing, sultry, soulful sounds!
    author: Marlyn

The soothing, sultry, soulful sounds of Meldoy Gardot are a treat not to be missed. I put this music on an audio tape, too, so I can listen while I drive. Let's have more CDs from this talented young artist!

  • Incredible Vocals and Enchanting Melodies
    author: Lance C. Hough

Rrrrrip! Fffffft. Click. Whhirrrrr. I pull the CD out of the CDBaby envelope and quickly load it into my car's CD player. My ears are treated to the soft and soultry tonality of Melody Gardot's incredibly rich yet breathy vocals. The deeply meaningful lyrics along with the raw instrumental accompaniments make this album a true experience to listen to. Although each track holds within it a distinctly unique sound and feel, the songs Cry Wolf and Goodnite (an unlisted bonus track) seem to stand out above the others. Quite honestly, I can only think of one negative thing to say about this album: It wasn't nearly long enough! I'm sincerely hoping for more from Melody very soon! Don't miss out on this debut album of one of those next-big-thing artists.

  • breathtaking
    author: lisa (from the group)

I have ordered lots of cds offline only to be disappointed by the quality when I get them. not so for you! I was blown away. I know you told us how these songs came about and I know you did most of them while you couldnt walk. But forget walking.......who needs to walk when you have a voice like that!!! Wow

  • beautiful
    author: like an angel

I know its only an EP, but from the second I put it on it was a priceless addition to my CD collection. I dont know much about the music industry, but I know good music when I hear it, and this is by far one of the greatest people I have heard in a long long time. Voice of an angel, and songwiting capability of someone far beyond her years.

  • best CD all year
    author: Michael Meyerson

I had to put everything down when I heard her voice for the first time. It was just so amazing. She was just such a cunning lyricist and her words spoke volumes..... I havent heard something this great since Eva Cassidy. In love.

  • Picture Jason Mraz, but without a penis...
    author: Michael (Alfonzo) Hoffman

From the first track (Wicked Game) to the final bonus track, Melody's music keeps you mezmerized. Her vocals are so breathy, but at the same time full of sound. The angelic vocals in the background really set it off in a few songs. The music is soothing, and immeditaly grabs your attention. I highly recommend buying this cd. Thanks CD Baby and Melody Gardot!

  • freaking fabulous and wonderful! I love it!!

Melody Gardot Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions (self-released) It's a trick of alchemy that awful pain and uncertainty can give rise to such bold and striking music. In desperate ballads ("Wicked Ride") and smoky blues songs ("Don’t You Worry Baby"), Philly-area singer-songwriter Melody Gardot finds the universal in her experiences and makes the most of a few well-chosen words. Occasional swells of background vocals and string arrangements rise up to lend angelic support, a throwback to lush, Cole Porter-style jazz-pop. But Some Lessons is more often a sparse affair that recalls her piano bar days, her rich range accompanied by little more than a tender guitar or a stormy piano. Mature beyond her 21 years, Gardot has mostly skipped the trappings of piano-pop cliche and aimed for something more poised and ambitious. *********************************************************** May 12-18, 2005 Unchained Melody REFLECTIONS: "It's like being a totally different person. The hard part is finding out who that is." Photo By: Michael T. Regan Singer-songwriter Melody Gardot plays through the pain. by Patrick Rapa SINGER-SONGWRITER Remember the sound of the pavement/ World turned upside down/ City street unlined and empty/ Not a soul around/ Life goes away in a flash right before your eyes/ If I think real hard well I reckon/ I've had some real good times. --"Some Lessons," Melody Gardot With a cane and dark glasses, Melody Gardot is neither inconspicuous nor fleet of foot. But she moves with confidence, makes it look like she belongs here in this upscale Center City hotel. She leads a small expedition — her mother, this reporter and a photographer — through the cavernous lobby and over to the shiny bank of elevators. Nobody says a word. At the end of a posh hallway on the top floor, in front of a panoramic wall of windows, sits a shiny black baby grand piano. A small parade of suits with afternoon cocktails exits the elevators and gives nary a glance before disappearing around the corner into the ballroom. Mostly, though, this is Gardot's little secret, a quiet place the young singer-songwriter used to sneak off to before the accident. Two years ago, she was 19, living in Queen Village and studying fashion at Community College of Philadelphia. One day while riding her bike in Old City, she was struck by a Jeep making an illegal turn. The effects were devastating. Her pelvis was shattered in two places and a spinal injury left her with myriad and strange symptoms. Her debut EP, Some Lessons, recounts the daily struggles and changing worldview which accompanied her gradual, possibly endless, recovery. "Why do the hands of time so easily unwind?" she ponders over gentle, jazzy guitar. On to the torchy, ruminating chorus: "Some lessons we learn the hard way." Her voice is warm and weighty, hinting at a maturity born not of mileage but of burden and experience. She sings like an older woman because she feels like one. Her laundry list of medical ailments is so long and so multifaceted, you wonder how she had the strength — or desire — to make music at all. The pelvic injury means she needs the cane to get around, and can't sit in one place for very long. She finds she has to stretch several times a day, so she's always got her yoga mat with her. "I'm still not the stair master, but I'm working on it," says the upbeat, energetic Gardot. Also very debilitating to the young songwriter is her hearing problem, one of many symptoms of what doctors believe is an autonomic nervous system dysfunction. "It's not that I can't hear, it's that I hear too well," she explains. "I can't get the background in the background." The accident also left her with increased photosensitivity — "It's like looking at heaven all the time" — hence the dark shades she never takes off. "It's hard to keep your spirits up when you're in this low light," she admits. "I love the sun but I can't deal with it." Most troublingly, Gardot suffers from short-term memory losses. She laughs at the situation: Some days she may accidentally eat three apples or brush her teeth four times, not remembering that she's already done it. She takes care to write down her song ideas in notebooks and on Post-its. Members of her band (she plays with a quiet guitar-bass-drums trio) have had to remind her how her own songs go. "It's kind of like being an old person," she says without a sigh. "I'm a project. I'm not easy." Pretty much from 9 to 5, Monday through Friday, she finds herself sitting before one kind of doctor or another. All have scratched their heads at her condition. It's two years on from the accident and progress has been slow. Where conventional medicine has come up short, she's exploring other options: macrobiotic cooking, homeopathic remedies, Reiki, aromatherapy. "I've seen a lot of rolled eyes," she says. "It's been a big scavenger hunt." A thin white cord seems to tether Gardot to her purse, but really it's the TENS (Transcutaneous Electro-Nerve Stimulator) unit inside. That device uses electric pulses to distract her body from pain. "Everybody thinks it's an iPod," she laughs. "I have to turn it off at shows because it makes my guitar go b-z-z-z-t." As you may imagine, the difficulties associated with live performances do not end there. Gardot has a show booked in Baltimore on the night of this interview. She's due to take the stage at 8, but she and her mom will hit the road at 1, allowing for frequent stops to stretch and deal with the overstimulation and noise that come along with the long car ride. Typically she spends the day before a concert resting and mentally preparing herself. Hours before she takes the stage she sits in the car, meditating to calm her nerves. Being in a loud bar could lead to migraines, tinnitus or blackouts. As usual, she tends to look on the bright side. "It keeps me away from people I don't want to be around. If people are loud and obnoxious I literally can't be around them." Right now, as an up-and-comer, she's doing all this prep for 20- or 30-minute sets. She's excited about forthcoming gigs opening for Jeffrey Gaines and David Poe. She figures she can get it together enough for about two shows a month. Some Lessons has the tongue-in-cheek subtitle The Bedroom Sessions, since she recorded it at home in recovery. "It's not about confidence. It's about putting it out there," she says. "It's involuntary. I guess it's my way of dealing." Upstairs in that hotel, she sits at the piano and starts to play "Momma," a pleading, haunting ballad. It starts with a twinkle and she hunches her body over the keys. Her right foot pumps a pedal and her hands move in waves. Conventioneers get off the elevators and stop for just a second to watch this young woman belting out "Momma what's going on" at the end of the hallway. "Give me a snifter," cracks Gardot between lines — a nod to her days playing at piano bars like Tiramisu off South Street when she was 16. When the music moves her, she brushes her hand up to dislodge an earplug so she can better hear herself. Eventually somebody from the ballroom calls security, and a guy comes around to politely kick us out. "It's not the first time," Gardot says with a smile. Mom retrieves the earplug from the carpet. Is Gardot holding out hope for a total recovery? "I'm holding out hope for acceptance," she says. "It's like being a totally different person. The hard part is finding out who that is." Ever since she got out of the hospital she's been living with her parents in South Jersey. Her pursuit of a degree in fashion has been put on hold, maybe forever. When she's not fighting to get her health back, she's writing letters and filing appeals to keep her insurance. The Jeep driver's coverage ran out almost right away and her own policy has threatened to drop her, or limit visits. "If you want something bad enough you have to keep kicking until you get it," she says. "It makes you a rock. There's nothing to hold me except my body going "you can't walk.' There's nothing the world can throw at me." ************************************************************

I cant get enough of this album and I dont even have it yet!!!!!! Im in shock of the wisdom, grace and strength that this young chanteuse possesses. She is a woman of great calibur and charisma and I know shes going to surpass all of her hard times. If any of you knew the half of what she had to do to get through a day you would well up inside with compassion for her as she is such a stong and unyielding soul. I never in my life have met such a woman and hope that the world welcomes her with open arms. Melody, your music is so passionate and honest, and its shows the true determination of your spirit. I look forward to hearing your full length and will enjoy the ep you sold me in the meantime.

Sleepy, sultry, smoky acoustic-born female jazzy pop that brings to mind the jazz/pop hybrid of Norah Jones. With the accessibility- harmonically, melodically and vocally- of sweet, mellow female folk pop, enriched with sophisticated jazz harmonies and a whispery overtone that puts a hush over her audience, Melody Gardot delivers some beautifully smoky songs that, like red hot embers, have an intense, long-lasting slow burn. One very nice album here.
