Album Notes

Mel Rosenberg - Vocals & Saxophone

Mel Rosenberg sings and plays romantic jazz standards, drawing on songs popularized by Sinatra, Chet Baker and Nat King Cole. His baritone voice and saxophone playing complement one another and he captivates his audiences with his engaging, melodic swing and stage presence.

In his youth, Mel received eight years of formal piano training in Canada, under the late Sandra Coupal. After moving to Israel, he studied jazz piano with Dr. Zvi Keren at Tel Aviv University, while at the same time pursuing a career as a scientist. In 1993, he took up saxophone (alto and subsequently tenor), and began to appear with his quartet in the summer of 1999. He currently plays a Selmer alto sax and a vintage Holton tenor. His singing style has developed alongside his sax playing, following classes with Anita Wardell and Sheila Jordan.

Mel's performances have included major venues in Israel, including the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival (2003, 2005, 2008), the Piano Festival (2004), the Beer Festival (2007), and Israel’s Spring Festival (2007). He appears regularly with the HED big band and several other bands. He has also been featured on numerous television and radio programs (samples: http://tinyurl.com/6ov6zy)

In 2005 Mel recorded his first CD, "The Aroma of You" with the Shay Zelman trio, featuring Jack Glottman (New York). The CD has received favorable reviews and substantial coverage on jazz radio stations. He has recently recorded his second CD, "The Essential Mel", which will be available soon.

Offstage, Mel is a professor of microbiology and inventor at Tel Aviv University. He also writes stories for children on topics related to oral hygiene, health, wellbeing and self-realization, which are free for the public on http://www.meltells.com.
